What? Is that not true? Did you watch practice this week? How many teams have any of us taken to a conference tourney title, a conference title, or the CWS?? I'll back my LSU successful HC and others can back Joe Blows throwing out their criticism behind pretend IDs who never have to make a decision under game time pressure and have perfect 20/20 after the play is over vision.
To pretend that 24-7 being with a team, experience in the game, and elite like success in the game doesn't place far greater weight on the opinion/moves made by the HC opposed to Joe fan is both amusing and laughable.
There is not a successful coach around who doesn't make mistakes, who doesn't rehash those mistakes in his mind, and who doesn't regret them.

It isn't that it isn't true, it is that it's irrelevant. Mike Leach never played football, but the dude knows more about offense than a lot of people. David Cutcliffe never played football. Joe Maddon, Jack Mckeon, Buck Showalter, Jim Leyland, and Earl Weaver never played baseball. Think they can't manage? The idea that experience is the only way one can learn and understand the strategy of baseball is false.

Oh please. He just wanted to be able to say his "gut feeling" was right in the post game show. Not bunting Diechman and putting the closer in in a tie ballgame were his gut feelings that go against basic baseball fundamentals. Even if they had worked they'd still be bad decisions. Idgaf how many games he's coached or how long he's been in the game. He screwed the pooch Friday night. That game is 100% on his ego and "gut feelings."

So in the beginning, he says he has principles and he sticks with them because otherwise you'll fall for anything. Later he says he went against his principles re: Sciambra and Chinea moves.
So does he stick with his principles or go against them? He seems to have said two different things in one sound byte to contradict himself.

It's not about having faith in the kid. It's that you bunt 10000% of the time in that situation. That's really not up for debate. It's not a decision that should even require thought. He wanted to gamble.

It would make me feel better to know he has an ego rather than being incompetent. If he thinks it was the right call, he's incompetent. If he's going with his gut, it's his ego going against percentages. If Deichmann never bunted in his life (which of course isn't true), then pinch hit Bryce. I know he can bunt. Seen him do it plenty at Barbe.

Beyond that, he himself admitted that in 2010 he didn't work hard enough, that when they changed the bats, he overreacted and bunted too much. He (apparently) rejects against all evidence the idea that bunting early in games is a stupid strategy. So it isn't like he's infallible. I'm not sure why he felt compelled to make the idea that he will be criticized for everything that doesn't work. When he introduced the buntathon to LSU baseball, it worked quite a bit, yet many people on here were against it regardless of outcome. The decision process and using good data is what matters. Not outcome. Sorry that I don't fit into your stereotype, Coach.
