Nassau looks like it sucks- help me out

Disney cruise with the fam and small kids all under 10. Diving or snorkeling is all I would want to do but kids too young to be comfortable making that happen. The forts look cool?
Went in jr high. Snorkled an unimpressive reef, and rode all over the island on a scooter. All I remember were rats in the trees and crappy tourist trap markets.

Just came back from a work conference at Atlantis. The tourist market is very underwhelming. It's dirty and seedy and there's not much there that I would consider worth buying.
Atlantis would be awesome for the kids. The various aquariums are pretty cool and the water park and lazy river were awesome. That's what I would do.

You are correct, Nassau itself does suck. Like others have said, go to the Atlantis. The best advice I can give you is to stalk the DISBoards forums (WDWinfo dot com). There's some great info there to help you plan the trip. If you end up going to the Atlantis, don't do it through Disney. Book a room at the Comfort Inn on Paradise Island, Atlantis passes are included (just don't use the room), it'll end up costing 1/2 the price.

We are doing a disney cruise later this year that goes to Nassau as well. From what I can tell the only real option is go to Atlantis, which costs an obscene amount of money.
I'd be curious to see what activities will happen on the ship while it's docked. Might not be a bad port to just stay on board.

I go there for work a good bit meaning probably 5-6 times a yr. It does suck. If you have kids just stay on the boat that day. Where else are you going?

your kids will love atlantis. lots to do. i think you can get a day pass, maybe? we were in the bahamas a few years ago. stayed in the abacos islands, gorgeous. we flew over to nassau for one day. walked around, toured the town..the straw market is meh, kind of cool seeing the government buildings, there was a small, retro pirate "museum" that was kind of fun (if your kids like pirates of the carribbean and and are youngish they might enjoy it), atlantis was definately the highlight of the day trip for my girls (they were elementary school & high school age then).

The cost of the 1 day passes at Atlantis are ridiculous! Just take a cab to the Atlantis and walk around, then go to the beach next to it. It is a free beach - Cabbage Beach.

You can walk around some areas of the Atlantis for free. Not worth paying the price for the one day pass, especially since you are paying a good penny for your DISNEY cruise.

I made a stop a few years back and opted for a cruise sponsered tour. Gahaha! It was some dude's van just driving through the hood.

I don't even know why so many cruise ships bother stopping there. Must be getting kickbacks from Atlantis, because there's nothing else worthwhile.
