Movies with really good ideas as the basis, that didn't work in reality

i watched a movie last night called knights of badassdom. it was about a big group of LARPers who summon an actual demon. had some good jokes mocking larpers (and a reference to this). it was a really cheap production but actually had some relatively big names, like peter dinklage, steve zhan, the mute chick from firefly/serenity, and sookie's brother. good idea for a horror comedy but it was pretty shitty. for instance, it had random heavy metal lip syncing a few times (and i mean over like minutes).

while watching it made me think of your highness, which was another good concept that sucked when executed

Contracted is a movie about a chick who has sex with a guy at a party and...contracts...something. obviously low budget and done well for what they have to work with, but it just has all this unnecessary bullshite about a lesbian relationship she's in and a drug past or something that makes her mom into a bitch. just a bunch of random, thrown-together bullshite to add fake tension and drama.

right now i'm watching "dealing with idiots", a movie about overzealous baseball parents. it's a jeff garlin movie with some major actors in it (jeff garlin, gina gershon, bob odenkirk, fred willard, jb smoove, timothy olyphant, etc). pretty decent idea, but it just wasn't executed well at all. it had some good moments of improv, but overall was not a good movie.

this tagline from RT was great

quote:

This isn't actually a movie about kiddie sports - it's a movie about Garlin interviewing the other parents and players to see if there's an interesting movie to be made at all. Answer: There isn't.

if it just dove head-first into the stuff without that premise, and if it didn't have some outrageous character types, it would have been a lot better. the scenes and responses within scenes are also vastly inconsistent in quality.

Dune. David Lynch is a terrific director, the cast was stacked with great actors and the movie was based on one of the most popular sci-fi books of all-time. However, the movie was horrible and extremely boring.

The ability to unlock the brain's full potential? Horrible premise?

well that whole "we only use 10% of our brains" meme is a myth, at least in those terms.

Limitless was a much better film with that type of premise

When I read the title, I thought "The Purge" immediately.

Yeah, it's a pretty ignorant concept, and I rejected the idea of the movie on that premise alone.

I was laughing because it sounds lame as frick. Like, it sounds like a fake movie that people would be watching/making fun of in an actual comedy movie.

You're not gonna get much better/funnier than South Park: Stick of Truth when it comes to a LARPing parody.
