This sucks, but this has to be because of his character.

What were the character issues?

From Walterfootball (who hasn't hated any of our offseason moves):
quote:

Dolphins acquire WR Kenny Stills from Saints for LB Dannell Ellerbe and 3rd-round pick
It's almost as if Sean Payton is having a garage sale outside of his house. I can imagine someone going up to him and asking, "How much for your Drew Brees?" only for Payton to respond, "I'm not selling him! But everything else is available! Look at all of these great deals!"

Payton has reportedly been getting rid of all the players Brees wasn't a fan of last year, so it's hard to hate anything he's doing. I'm actually a fan of the Saints acquiring a third-round selection for Kenny Stills, who is just a one-dimensional deep threat. He wasn't even on the field that much before Brandin Cooks suffered an injury in the middle of the season, so it's not a big loss. I'm not fond of Dannell Ellerbe, who is overpaid and injury-prone, but obtaining a selection in the middle of the third round makes this a solid trade for the Saints.

I'm not as crazy about it for the Dolphins. They do need a speed receiver with Mike Wallace constantly quitting on the team, but they may have been able to obtain a better player than Stills with their third-round selection. Unloading Ellerbe's contract is nice - hilarious that Miami was willing to give up a third to do that - so I don't hate this move, but New Orleans is the clear winner in this swap.

Grade for Dolphins - C+
Grade for Saints - B+

Only problem I have with loading up on draft picks is we can't draft for shite early.

You're right. We should give them all away.

The Saints would be assembling the world's shortest receiving corps, though.

You do realize that Stills and Landry are pretty similar in measurables, right?

Landry's Combine Measurements

Kenny's Combine Measurements

Kenny is an inch taller but has smaller hands, short arms, and weighs less. The only substantial difference between the two is their 40 times.

Not a big loss at all.

This is a guy who has had THREE 100+ yard games in two years and TEN games with 30 yards receiving or less in two years.

The most receptions he's ever had in a single game was 8 and that was kind of a one time thing.

He's not bad in terms of potential, but let's not blow things out of proportion here. He was not being relied upon to carry much of the offense at all. He is easily replaced.

I disagree with you here, SpqrTiger.

While the guy was never going to have a Pro Bowl-caliber season or give us 1200+ yards in a season, he is still a damn solid #2 or #3 (something many teams would covet).

Barring any injury, he will probably be in the league for a good while and is capable of consistently giving you 700-900 yards each season.

There is a contract restructuring taking place between the Saints and Ellerbe creating needed cap space for them as part of trade w/Miami

RapSheet: Meanwhile, new #Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe has agreed to restructure his contract after his trade from Miami. Will help NO cap situation

His cap # was the only thing that would have soured the trade for me. Otherwise we got a third rounder for a 5th round guy and when healthy, a starting MLB.

Yea, he had 0 guaranteed money left on the contract after the trade. They probably confirmed a new contract to him before agreeing to the trade

Must be one hell of a restructure. He's not getting paid anywhere near what his contract is.

Look at the numbers I posted. His original deal had 14mill gtd. He got most of that last year, his deal was going to be nowhere near the reported 21 mill remaining. Id bet his guarantee money was around 5-6mill left.

He had no guaranteed money, so it's basically an entirely new contract.

Holy hell some national NFL people really think Kenny Stills is amazing. Not knocking him but some are talking like he's irreplaceable.

It's pretty funny. When we traded Jimmy they were saying he was our whole offense and we didn't have any good receivers. Now suddenly stills was great?
