I got a phone call from my home parish's council chair saying he reviewed my resume (he is friends with my father) about a position for the parish. I am qualified and the money is there, I am just hesitant to work for the government.

I know the parish president appoints the position, so I essentially would be up for renewal every four years. The job would not be difficult to do, it is what I do in a different state for a university.

Anyone have any experience in civil service?

People in government jobs do not "work."

If you have connections (and the money is right), I'm not sure what the hesitation is about.

Sounds like a cush gig

Worked as a paid intern a few summers ago for the local police jury. Only complaints were shitty coffee and work starting at 8 instead of 9 (I was a lazy 19 year old).

I know it's probably not what you're looking for, but the people I worked with seemed very knowledgeable and competent and always willing to help, so there's that.

ETA: also helped that it was the engineering dept. and not the regular riff raff circlejerking that government work is known for

I've been in govt for 8 years. Started in civil service in La and now I'm in DC.

You'll deal with more bullshite than the private sector but you'll have lots of opportunities to move up and out

If you think you are dumb enough and willing to do little enough actual work in order to make it in a government role, then go for it.

Yes it's awesome. You don't really work.

Local level can sometimes be competent and get things done, albeit on a limited scope.

State government is generally incompetent, but every once in a while accidentally does something helpful, albeit on a limited scope.

Federal government is pretty much nothing but fraud, nepotism, and abuse.

My mom works for city/parish government in BR. From the way she describes it, it's really not that different from any other gig, but it's not an appointed position so YMMV.

I work for civil service and it gets a bad rep honestly. Is there some zeros and drones? Yes, but I also work with some brilliant people.

Who could possibly be NOT qualified to work for the government?

I work for the federal government for the first couple of months of every year and then I work for the state government for the next few weeks after that.

Yes. I'll follow that up with a couple of questions for you. Do you feel like making a 3rd of what people in your field working in the private sector make? Also, would you enjoy watching dumb@sses get promotions over you just because they are veterans and you're not? If the answer is yes to both of those, then go for it!
