re: A current all-NBA team would wreck the dream team

To the people telling me Magic Johnson was the Finals MVP as a center...
He "played center" for 1 game only when Kareem got hurt. Game 6 in 1980.
I just went back and watched a condensed version of the game.
Although he was labeled as the "center", he was still handling the ball and working from the perimeter like a point guard... shooting jump shots, running the break, etc. he posted up ONE time, and immediately passed it back out to an open man.
So to those saying he won the MVP "as a center" as proof that Magic could post up, either you are just regurgitating something you heard without knowing for yourself, or you are being purposely disingenuous.
I've known and been arguing this for years.
While he "started" at Center, he played very little actual time at the position in the game.
Dream Team would still be fine in a game.

Shaquille wasn't even in the NBA yet for the '92 Olympics...

Dude please stop with this. You're ruining the nostalgia! If Magic played today, he would be the best Center in the league! This is a known fact from that one game where he played Center.

he was drafted into the NBA that summer. He put up 23/14/3 as a damn 20 yr old.

You are just wrong. Now, post defenders can put a forearm in the offensive player's back and are allowed to push back. Back in '92, defenders couldn't do that.
Are you going to make me look up the rules and show it to you?

But if you are making a "basketball was better in the 90s' argument
It wasn't though. The defenses are way more advanced now and the offenses are way more efficient.

A startgin line up of Stockton, Jordan, Pippen, Malone and Shaq qoudl eat alone any lineup you could put together.
I love the idea of Stockton trying to guard Westbrook

You think Deandre Jordan or Marc Gasol is stopping Shaq?
I mean Marc Gasol won DPOY just 2 seasons ago. He wouldn't shut down Shaq obviously, but he is no pushover defensively.

Curry/Harden/James/Davis/Jordan and bring Westbrook off the bench as the backup 1/2 and try to run these guys out of the building.
Westbrook & Harden have way too many 5-20 shooting nights. The Dream Team would not play nicely with these 2.

any Center on the dream team, as well as Shaq and 2-3 other centers from that era would abuse Gasol. He doesn't face players like that anymore.

And he hardly played. You guys are taking what we know about Shaq now and are expecting college Shaq to start over Robinson or Ewing.
That wouldn't happen, and it's irrelevant to the thread because this thread is specifically about the 1992 Olympic team.

quote:Are you using this as an argument that interior defenders are more physical? What you are saying is that modern Interior defenders are so weak, the NBA had to help them out.
Now, post defenders can put a forearm in the offensive player's back and are allowed to push back. Back in '92, defenders couldn't do that.
In 92, they weren't allowed to do that, so they had to be bigger and stronger to use their body.
In today's NBA, you can double a guy without the ball. . .which led to less of a premium on big strong dudes. And they had to make it legal to foul the ballhandler in the post, because the new weaker post players couldn't stop anyone.
You just made my point for me.

I would love to see Westbrook ball hog his team of allstars. His point average is amazing this year, but his FG% sucks.

There isn't a center today who could lineup with Shaq at pretty much any point in his NBA career up until 2007 maybe.
Plus Michael fricking Jordan.

No. But taking that starting 5 and countering with
Russ
Lebron
KD
AD
Gasol
Shaq will dominate Gasol. Malone on O vs AD on D would be interesting because of Malone's size vs Davis length and athleticism. LBJ would reasonably contain MJ as much as anyone could. Pippen probably gets KD pretty good.
When 15 has the ball, there are also matchup nightmares though. Pippen is the only one who can guard KD or Lebron. So pick your poison there. MJ was great at D but gives up too much size vs LBJ or KD. Stockton isn't athletic enough for Russ, and way too small to put on anyone else. Malone would have troubles guarding Davis because of athleticism. And the floor spacing of this lineup means Shaq can't guard the rim the whole time which opens up driving lanes for Bron/Russ.
So many people ITT post about how no one could guard so and so from 92, then ignore the matchups that 92 couldn't defend.

He also averages 8 APG. KD has missed about half the year in case you were wondering. Should the Thunder have Dion Waiters as their primary scorer?

Nobody does this. You would get absolutely torched doing this.

The game has evovled. Bigs are more skilled now.
Offenses have evolved to where many teams have realized just throwing the ball in to the post isn't the best form of offense.
Tim Duncan is arguably the best PF of all time and the Spurs realized they had to change from just throwing the ball in to him every possession. They would absolutely carve up these 90's defenses.

1. its fricking stupid to get to pick from every player currently in the NBA from all over the world vs a USA team in 1992 that didn't have shall on it.
Nah. That is the point of the thread. Lester Earl and others have a problem with Spaniards on the team, but the OP specifically said a 2015 All-NBA team against the 1992 Dream Team. People have continued to move the goal post in this entire thread, but few have actually responded to the original hypothetical.

No shite. These kids really don't know crap.
The dream team would be fine. It would be a good game.
