Beck, Rhoads, Schenker I'd categorize as one of the best. Hendrix is a popularity contest so he wins that aspect. Darrell, great guitarist, though I wouldnt pool him top 50. I saw him live and stood about 20ft from him at the Houston Raceway in Aug. 2000 Ozzfest.

Recently been binge watching and listening to James Jamerson’s work, especially Marvin Gayes “what’s happening brother”

I envy you. This wasn’t too long after Friday Night In San Francisco, which still ranks in my all time favorite recordings. I’ve seen both McLaughlin and DiMeola individually (the DiMeola show was actually a pretty small intimate venue in Houston when I lived there and was very close to the timeframe you mentioned. Any clue where that might have been?)Beautiful energy...one of those rare music experiences where you wish you could make time stand still. But I’d always, always wanted to see them together.

i cant belive there are 50 guitarists in the rock world thatare above Dimebag ..for heavy thrash metal..he is top 5 for sure ...overall ,ok , maybe not top 10 but certainly top 50 .... also, Uli Roth maybe the most underrated guitarist of all time ...check out early scorpions with him

I’ve been playing 37 years and the single best guitarist I have ever seen or heard is former Allman Brother, Jack Pearson. He’s the one guitar player here in Nashville that all of the pickers here pay to see live.

Another guy that didn't get long enough in this world, that I was very fortunate to see a couple of times, is John Campbell.
Thanks for that suggestion and link. I've probably listened to it over a dozen times in the past 24 hours.

"Well, there's thirteen hundred and fifty-two guitar pickers in Nashville..."
and they can't all be wrong, right?
You're right. I've heard Pearson too. He's a killer.

I haven't read all 11 pages of this thread so I don't know if these artists have been mentioned, but two of the greatest ever:
Les Paul
Gary Moore

I'm not going to rename all the big hitters mentioned over and over but I would like to give honorable mentions to people like Mark Tremonti and Zakk Wylde. Both phenomenal, Mark especially.

The duo of Tipton Downing made a pretty good guitarist.

SRV
Rene Martinez was SRVs guitar tech, and later guitar tech for John Mayer. Martinez was a highly accomplished classical guitarist capable of performing material SRV, Mayer, most electric players could only do in their dreams.

It’s amazing that through 11 pages I’ve only seen Gary Moore and Prince only mentioned one time...... crazy.
