This is sort of silly:

quote:

Sadly, the world has changed in the last few decades, and it is no longer a safe place for children. Pedophiles and child molesters are more pervasive than ever.

As is most of the rest of that article.

so fricking stupid

perception is not reality

the world is so much safer now for a kid than it was when most of us were growing up (80s and 90s)

If you read the whole article you would realize that that is not the stand point of the author. He cited it as a quote from someone's work, and later states that he disagrees with that point.

My input: Growing up my parents hated sleep overs, and very rarely obliged. It was only allowed with families they were very familiar with. I can only think of one specific example where they wouldn't let me sleep over at a birthday party because they had actual concerns about a parent's alleged alcoholism.

While my son is far too young to be concerned about this issue yet, I do recognize that it is something I will need to take time to carefully consider.

I feel that while you can't live in a world of fear, you do need to explain to your children that not everyone is looking out for their best interest. Kids need to learn how to stand up for themselves, and understand that they need to talk to you if someone tried do something that made them uncomfortable. Understanding personal boundaries, and being aware of empty threats is very important.

Ultimately you need to take into account the maturity of your child, and how comfortable you are with the other family. It doesn't hurt to have an open and honest discussion with the other family, and even set ground rules if you are concerned about the influence of another sibling.

I'm pretty sure the exact opposite is true. We just have social media now so every horrible thing is broadcast across FB, Twitter etc. Doesn't mean there are more pedophiles, kidnappings etc, you just are aware of them.

I wont buy into this fear mongering when I'm a parent. My brother and his wife allow my 2 nephews, 12 and 9, to ride their bikes all over the neighborhood, go play at the park 2 streets over etc. Have even left them home alone for 20 mins while they run to the store. The other parents think they're crazy. They won't allow their 12 yr olds to ride their bike around the block by themselves. That's fricked up. That generation is gonna be a bunch of pussies scared of their shadow.
