WOW...easily the best Chinese food I have ever had. Been meaning to get by there for a couple years, but kept forgetting about it.

We got steamed pot stickers, hot and sour soup, garlic eggplant (incredible), and the Spicy Chicken dish Quong Chin or something like that.

If this is authentic Chinese my Chinese food life until now has been a lie!

The Garlic Eggplant is absolutely fantastic. I didn't like the Chong Qing as much as most, but that's because I like saucy Chinese meats.

Even their recipe of "regular" Chinese food (like Sesame Chicken) is amazing. So different from the picture menu places.

They have the best hot and sour soup I've ever had.

Definitely one of the most underrated places in Baton Rouge. Its a shame cause its their location that kills them

They also could improve the atmosphere so much. Why have a TV blaring CNN and lights cut up so bright?

Play some music. Dim the lights. Would be much nicer. Also, don't give me bubble gum after the meal. I mean what is up with that, seriously?

The location definitely does, but I think it is a combo of things.

It is funny how thin the line of success can be .. sushi restaurants have a wait on Friday nights, Chinese restaurants mostly only get takeout business. Places with good atmospheres like Superior or Ninfas get a wait, but your average Mexican joint doesn't always have a big crowd.

Being that Omi is authentic to the point where the employees hardly speak English, it is very quiet in the place.. there isn't a drink menu or even real bartender.. TV is tuned to Food Network.. it doesn't make for much atmosphere, and that plays a decent role in where people decide to eat. All of that combined with it kinda being isolated there off of Essen.. I see why it struggles to be packed.

Agree. I don't know if this is just a disconnect because (in my experiences) their staff hardly even speaks English.. or if they just aren't concerned with atmosphere.

I think it is probably the former. Just something they don't even realize needs to be done.

FWIW, I don't think every restaurant needs a good atmosphere. But since this is not a hole-in-the-wall Asian restaurant like the Viet places are, it needs atmosphere to survive. The place is nice and large.

I did not have this.

I don't want to see them not do well, because I love the food. But I admit I'm in the group that isn't going somewhere like Omi on my Friday night. I'm going somewhere that I can get drinks and enjoy the company I'm with. I like to feel like I'm doing something on a weekend night, and I don't always want that to involve going to a bar after dinner, so a restaurant with a good atmosphere where I can hang out for a bit is a happy medium.

I love this place. I actually started going on Sunday for lunch when I'm in BR on the weekends at times.
Everyone is right about the atmosphere and location. It hinders it for Friday and Saturday night dinners.
I hope this place keeps going and doesn't shut down. I'd be sad.
I actually suggested to some friends to go there after the baseball game Saturday night instead of PF Changs. They did not take my advice.

I've been in there on Friday nights and it is usually jammed with Asians. People who care less about being seen somewhere "cool" and more about eating awesome food.

The best food always comes from dive, hole in the wall places.

I seriously wondered, being that I have been a small business owner for years, if they would be open to hearing some suggestions.

After eating there, I definitely want them to succeed but the atmosphere is flat out terrible.

It's almost as if they are trying to be too "American." TV blaring, room brightly lit, bubble gum after dinner, seems like possibly an Asian stereotype of Americans.

Ok, maybe the best ethnic food comes from dives. I can honestly say that the vast majority of epic ethnic food experiences I have had throughout the USA have occurred in total dives.

Has it occurred to you that Americans stereotype Asians way more than the opposite? Do you think they give out fortune cookies after meals in China? I can assure you that they don't. Maybe the atmosphere in Omi is closer to a legit Chinese restaurant than we think it is.

People love their cocktails and lively atmosphere.

I don't know. I've been secretly wishing I could convince Spice to hire me freelance to market the hell out of their place

Being in marketing the limited time I've been in it, I've realized there are some people who just flat out do not see the importance of advertising or creating an attractive environment beyond their product. Generally, they're passionate about their product and assume that will attract flocks of people.

Unfortunately, unless you are a divey ethnic hole-in-the-wall, you need at least SOME branding.. and you need good atmosphere. At least if you want the weekend crowds.

It was more of a "I don't want to leave my comfort zone" kinda issue.

I tried it this weekend for the first time and really liked it. Like a more authentic P.F. Changs. We walked in and there were nothing but Asian families so I felt like I came to a good spot. We went safe and ordered the sesame chicken and garlic shrimp. Really liked both. Had the fried rice and some egg rolls, as well. I want to go back and try some other things but not sure how adventurous I want to be. Any recommendations?
