quote:

"So last season wasn't an adjustment for me. What I do think that you have to realize is how good the defenses are in the SEC. Veteran quarterbacks were the ones who flourished against those defenses and the young quarterbacks were hot and cold. Did we want that to be us? Absolutely not."

quote:

"The downside of a young quarterback is he spends a lot of his time thinking what he's got to do and what everybody else on offense has got to do instead of thinking what the defense he's facing is trying to do.

"Our guys know our offense now. Once you learn the offense, it gives you more time to spend reading the defense. So now it's 'where's that free safety, what's the stance of that corner - is it man or zone, where's that linebacker's eyes looking, what's the front?'

"Because they can now focus on the defense, they can lead the guys around them.

quote:

"If you watched our quarterbacks last season, they were spending so much time thinking about what they had to do. In high school, they led their teams because they knew their offenses.

quote:

"The last thing is all of our quarterbacks, not just Anthony and Brandon, need to be more accurate throwing the football. We can help that scheme-wise by giving them throws they can make.

quote:

"I don't know of any throw that Anthony and Brandon can't make. They just need to have the confidence and belief they can do it."

"The competition is so stiff every day in practice," Cameron said. "You can improve in two, two and a half hours like you wouldn't believe because the pressure you're under here every day. I've seen as much improvement in our quarterbacks this week as I've ever seen in a group of quarterbacks in that small a timeframe."

Good read. Proof will come on the field this year whether Cam is coaching them up.

He doesn't sound defensive to me. I thought he sounded very professional. He's just giving a detailed and thoughtful answer to the QB situation.

Q: How difficult is it in-season to improve the play of your quarterbacks or make dramatic offensive changes?

Is that why our QB throws 12 passes a game?

I would have to say yes. I think WR's getting stronger and better at getting off of press coverage will help too. Last year, I felt the receivers got pushed around a lot. That plus some better QB play will put us where we need to be.
I still feel that if we can get 225 yards a game and a positive td to turnover ratio, we can win it all. I really like the talent on the team, got some special players.

AJ's "happy feet" issue doesn't seem like it comes from not knowing the offense. More like not being able make reads quicklyand not being able to anticipate when a receiver who's not open when the ball leaves his hand will be open when it gets to the receiver

If it doesn't work this year what does Miles do to his friend, sink the ship with him or move him into the dreaded admin role.

Your quote from last August may accurately reflect a lot of growth on the part of the QBs regarding understanding concepts and plays. It is doubtful that they were meant to express that the QBs were fully developed and ready to play Ms St, Auburn & Bama.

The comments from the current article express the sentiment that not only do the QBs have to have that understanding, but have to develop the confidence to know that they know the concepts and plays and can execute them in the face of aggressive defenses that are trying to trick them.

This idea of progression makes sense... and you can't usually get to the level Cameron is talking about (knowing your offense so well that you can focus more on the defense) until you have a lot of experience. Our QBs did not have any significant experience going into this past year... not to mention the lack of experience in the receiving corps and RBs... and changes to the OL schemes.

Was it worse than fans expected last year-- yes. AJ was reportedly better in practice than what we saw. It doesn't make Cameron's comments then or now inaccurate. Will AJ develop the confidence in the system, the players and himself that he did not have last year? ... remains to be seen. Can BH take the next step in terms of dedication and poise himself so that he can take over if AJ is not getting it done? ... also remains to be seen. The comments are still interesting and do shed a little bit of light on what is going on.

I see it as mostly mental. And I think you're partially right. But these little things... happy feet, not making the quick read, etc. are often a result of a tiny bit of hesitancy-- hesitancy that comes from not having complete confidence that you know where all your players are so you can focus on the defense as Cameron is suggesting: Instead of AJ just dropping to his spot while paying attention to the defense and making the best choice, he's dropping back, thinking "okay, Dural will go here... I wonder how much time I have... ohh, there's the free safety taking away option 1... oh, crap... don't know where the WDE is... I probably have to run now."

I don't know what AJ's ceiling is. It's a little unfair to suggest he won't improve. It's reasonable to say Cameron has a point. The more AJ works with the players around him, the more automatic many things will become and the less he has to think about them at all. Then he can focus on the defense and settle into a groove.

You're making very reasonable points. And we do tend to forget that these are young men still climbing the learning and maturity curves. Hard to know when the light will come on for any particular kid, or how bright it will be when it does.

This. Sounds like a coach trying to justify the shite sandwich our offense was last year.

I have faith our offense will improve if we can get Harris to start. I didn't see any improvement in AJ last year, and in fact saw him backslide a bit. I think Harris' natural arm talent gives us the best chance to be explosive on offense.

If Anthony Jennings was capable of checking down to his second receiver, he would be a decent college QB. Harris is going to be the guy IMO. Spring will tell us if Cam is blowing smoke or if there actually is imprvement.

get outta here!

you are being very close minded. learning the QB position at the SEC level is damn hard. you are also blind if you didn't see any improvement in AJ last year. he was much more efficient in running the offense the last two games. it certainly wasn't the offense's fault we lost that bowl game. he and the offense played plenty good enough to win but they just didn't get the ball enough thanks to notre dame keeping the balling on O so much. chavis was the shite sandwich in that game.

the problem with qb last year was that we didn't have one with experience and our inexperienced ones were slow to develop. yes, it's the coaching staffs fault for not having a qb with experience but it happens at every school.

this year will be a lot better at that position no matter which QB starts. yes, that includes AJ. if AJ beats out harris again i'm sure you (and others) will blame miles and Cameron but for some ignorant reason will not blame the player.

I just want good qb play no matter which one.

I'm on the Harris train, but all I want is a QB good enough to help unclog the LOS for our backs.

I agree with this. My other concern with Jennings is his inaccuracy. He simply looks like he can't hit the broad side of a barn. I hope more experience will help, but the accuracy seems like it would have improved by now, if he has the capability.

based on the limited time I saw him play last year I also think (emphasize THINK) he is the better passer and the faster runner.

this COULD translate to him being a better qb. but it's up to him. as coach cam said, the qb must know the plays and the other players positions so well he can concentrate on the defense. it takes time and that time differs for each person.

I just know that coaching is a two way street, just like teaching is. there is a teacher but there is a student that must learn.

we desparately need an above average qb nest year. if we get one, we can be on hell of a good team, esp if we start fast with early SEC wins against state and auburn.
