Rust removal from gun?

My mom brought me my old 20 gauge shotgun I used to hunt with as a kid. I hadn't touched the gun in probably 20 years and it's just been sitting. There's quite a bit of rust on it and I need to clean it up. Any suggestions on what to use?

Brass brush and oil, something like CLP. Start there to determine if it is surface rust or pitted...

Very low grit steel wool and gun oil works also.

I inherited a '61 Sears and Roebuck 12ga. from a family member 3 years ago. it had a good bit of surface rust, no pitting luckily. I used this kit to fix it up.

Order a Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner pad and use with some Breakfree CLP. Let the CLP soak on the rust for a day or so before starting.

You will get suggestions about steel and brass wool. Both will work to some extent, but Big 45 is the best for light rust.
For heavy rust, crush the mouth of a brass rifle or handgun ammo case and use it as a scraper in conjunction with CLP.
NOTE: Loose rust particles floating around in the oil can scratch bluing.
