If you are really concerned, call your insurance agency, talk to the claims department, make them aware of your concerns, and they will likely advise you on what to do.
I'd say wait for the adjuster, talk to them when they are inspecting the boat/trailer and let them know your worries about the lower unit, and then take it to a mechanic.
Obviously, they are still liable if the mechanic finds damage to the engine...you will just have to document it a little more thoroughly.
