the new rule requires the matter to make an effort to avoid being hit by the pitch.

Depends on how each ump defines "effort". Too subjective to say it would help/hurt anyone more than anyone else.

Doesn't one of our new recruits hold a record for HBP in the state? NCAA hates LSU!

Lake Charles (La.) Barbe High senior Bryce Jordan set the national record for most times hit by a pitch in a season.

And if you turn and get hit in the balls, you get a home run.....if you can make it around the bases.

I thought that was already the rule. I know at least that it used to be. It cost us a game against Arkansas once. Tied in the bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, our batter got HBP, which should have won the game for us, but the ump disallowed it, saying the batter didn't make an effort to avoid being hit. Arkie got out of the inning and went on to win in extra innings.

I'm just glad to have a chance to listen to Hawthorne interpret it.

I don't know if it will help or hurt LSU but I like the rule for baseball. We'll adjust. But it's another judgment call and yet another reason, sooner or later, to bitch at the blue.

I thought this has been a rule, but I watch way more MLB than college. It's a pretty easy call to make. Some players are really good at making it appear like they're trying to get out of the way when they are doing the opposite. Outside of those players, it's a fairly easy call.

I've spoken with an SEC umpire and his general rule is if the batter is crowded over the plate and the pitch is thrown near the plate, he would expect the batter to move away.

However, if the pitch is so far out of the zone that it would travel through the batter's box, he'd call the HBP.

Basically, he would reward a pitcher for having control and penalize him for throwing way out of the strike zone.
