It gets more absurd each year. I do them myself as an accountant and am just generally pi$$ed off about the whole process. Waiting on companies to send out information, getting info in Feb from banks for IRA, 1098 forms, 1099-B, INT, DIV, and now HSA forms, W-2 for employers, 1099-MISC, and looking for my charitable donations, etc. Then hoping it's right, and then figuring out if I paid medical expenses out of pocket or with HSA, dependent care credits, calculating medical mileage, donations, etc.

The best is when I get a re-stated 1099-B or 1099-DIV form on April 12th after I have filed my taxes.

It is a system that punishes the honest and rewards cheating.

I pay 500-600 a year to have an accountant do my taxes. It is silly.

The IRS should outsource the collection of taxes to Google or Apple. Whatever these people make is always easy and it works.

Sounds like you need to get better organized.

Its bad. This faceless zombie agent you MUST pay and file paperwork too.... and if you mess up, you pay or go to jail, but if they mess up its no problem. The funny thing, they take your money and don't tell you where they spend it: Example: Federal Tax <---okay what the hell did that go towards? The military or some free-loading crack addict on disability?
