Would any of you recommend a Ruger Mark III as a first handgun purchase?

I am thinking this might be the first one I buy to go to the range and learn, then get my (first) dream gun, Sig P226.
Or should I just spend the extra money now and get the Sig?

Or I also am considering getting an SR9.

If you want a gun that will double as a suitable gun for home defense, get the Sig. I would get it first.
EDIT: You know I'm a big fan of the SR9 as well. Can't go wrong with it.
If you're in a real bind, get the Ruger 9E. Identical mechanics to the SR9 but costs them less money to manufacture.

Sure.
They're easy to shoot well and cheap. Only downside is they're tricky to break down to clean, but you won't be doing that a whole lot anyway.
Getting the sig wouldn't be a bad move if you're already familiar with guns and know that's what you want.

I don't really need a handgun for self defense right now. In the future, that will be the purpose of the P226 though.
I just like the idea of getting really proficient at shooting with something like a Mark III since it's cheaper to cycle through a bunch of rounds at the range.

22 is harder to find than 9mm right now actually. The market is slowly getting stock of 22 again, but 9mm has it outnumbered.
Learning proficiency with 9mm is perfectly fine and still not that expensive.
But it's totally up to you obviously.

Save up and get the gun you want
ETA- said it before here, but my p226 is my favorite gun to shoot at the range. Good choice

Get the ruger, it won't be long before you buy the sig too.

The Ruger Mark iii 22/45 was the first handgun I purchased. At the time .22lr was cheap and readily available. Great gun to learn with and it will always have a use. Even though I have quite a few guns now, I always take my trusty ruger to the range when I go.

Why not get a Sig Mosquito?
Same controls as the 226

I've always loved the look of this gun.
I don't really care about it being similar in control/form/fit to the 226. I can adjust later.
I just wanted to know if I was crazy for wanting my first gun to be a .22.

It's never a bad time to buy a Ruger Mark series.
You'll then buy the SR9 hoping to curb the Sig desire.
You'll then buy the Sig.
It won't stop with the Sig either.
Good luck with the new addiction.
