re: Would any of you recommend a Ruger Mark III as a first handgun purchase?

Coming from the guy who just bought a stainless rifle.
I would go stainless. More durable.
ETA: I'm all about wood and blued if it's a nice weapon that looks really good, but for a ruger .22, stainless all day.

This is a cheap gun that he should spend as little as possible to get into a real gun

$270 is already mighty cheap. And just because it's a starter pistol that's inexpensive doesn't mean he should completely cheap out on it.

Yes, but it isn't necessary. If blued was more than $30 cheaper Id get blued.
Stainless is low maintenance but most people baby their guns so it isn't typically an issue.

Only downside is they're tricky to break down to clean
I almost threw mine in the trash last year trying to reassemble. Cooler heads did prevail and after a respite I was able to cobble it together.
It still shoots well.

There's nothing CHEAP nor UNREAL about any of the guns the OP has mentioned possibly buying. :roll eyes:

No ya don't. I've broken down my Mk 1 only 1-2 times. It's not something that needs to be done regularly. Just run a Bore Snake down the barrel and clean the action w/ CLP and you'll be fine.

KC,
I think it'd be FINE to buy a Ruger Mk III for your first handgun, especially since that's what I did at 17 y/o. Mine looks just like the one in Shexter's post except mine is blue. Even though 22LR ammo is hard to find, the 22LR is unrivalled for plinking/learning basic gun handling and shooting skills. Get a Mk III, shoot it a LOT and later when you're ready to step up to a bigger caliber you'll have already developed good fun handling skills.
The Ruger priced at $270 would be a GREAT buy for you.
