To work at an upscale restaurant (in BR, Ruffinos for instance), what type of work history do you need to wait tables?

I'm assuming you can't just walk in and say you want to wait tables without having a nice looking resume as a waiter/waitress, correct?

Just had this thought come to mind this afternoon and figured why not ask The OT.

It's really not as hard as you think. You could always lie on your résumé as well. They don't check. Ruth's Chris trains you for a little while and then you do a mock serve where you wait on the GM. If the staff thinks you're up for the task then they hire you

I did this 20 years ago. Started at a casual place by cortana mall. Then quit and went to Drusilla Seafood which is a step up. Owner threw a fit and screamed at me as if he were 12 years old so I started looking around and got a gig at Manseurs as a bus boy. After 3 months I was a waiter there and made pretty good money. They had career waiters there but I was done before I graduated college because it was time to take an internship.

So, yeah.. start at a more casual place to figure out how to handle the general concept of being a waiter. Most of these places have high turnover so it's not hard to get a job if you're clean looking and personable.

I bet if you're a good looking college girl with big boobs no high end experience would be required. It's not requirement to wait on me.

Waiting tables isn't difficult. I'm not sure why certain people can't do it.

Quite honestly, I wish I had waited at a higher end restaurant. One of my biggest complaints about waiting tables? Shitty arse kitchens who couldn't get food orders accurate or out in a timely manner.

Can't imagine you'd have that issue at a more upscale place.

How high end are you talking?

High-end multi-location or high-end single location?

I know for places like Del Friscos you have to have at least 5 years experience waiting tables and they would like to see no less than 2+ consecutive years with at least one reputable restaurant.

3+ LEGIT references from current industry managers.

Background and Credit check

You are also subject to a drug test (HAIR TEST) at some of the nicer places here in Dallas

Is Ruffinos considered a high end restaurant?

I know at a certain very nice restaurant in BR the waitresses can clear 100k a year. I assume you have to have lots of experience

You'd be surprised how many of them take people with little to no experience. Some of the people I know that TJ Ribs hired are barely able to take a shite by themselves. I know TJ's isn't really upscale, but still...

A lot of them you get hired as a backwaiter (glorified busser) then work your way up to being a real waiter. People with good experience may get hired directly to being a waiter though

I don't think you need much experience at all. Go in there and try for it. Good luck!

I know a guy who used to be the head waiter at Commander's. Has even come in specifically on his days off to wait on two presidents. He was making a whole bunch of money (6 figures), but got burned out after a while. Was looking for something else, and my parents got him making 3/4 what he was, but with full benefits, retirement, etc, and he enjoys the stability more.

He'll still go in for a high profile person every now and then, and sometimes bartends on the weekends, but said he busted his arse his entire life to make it to where he was. I'd guess he had been waiting tables for around 15-20 years at that point. Not something a lot of people are willing to do.

I worked at TJ Ribs back in high school as a bus boy one summer and made really good money for my age believe it or not. Place is always packed. Servers would tip us out every night. Wasn't the best job in the world by any means but for a high schooler it was a pretty fun job.
