They are averaging 1 in every 187 plays while league average is 1 fumble on ever 105 plays.
The chance of this happening is 1 in 16,233.

Imagine how stunning their fumble ratio would've been without Ridley.

How long could they have been doing this? I feel like it's been a while and they finally got busted.

Vereen sabotaged Ridley by properly inflating the balls he was using

I think the patriots are pumping hot air into the game balls before ref inspects them.
Then the ball will cool down and the pressure reduced.
Nobody is tamping the balls. Just some simple physics

Can't wait for the congressional hearings on this after the Super Bowl.

You can do some tests to find out the relationship between the temperature difference and the ball pressure.
For example, if every 20degree corresponds to 1 psi, to make the ball from 12.5 psi to 11 psi, the air will be heated 30 degree higher than the temperature in the fields. Looks like they did the same thing wigh 11 balls
The ball with the right psi, looks like it is used as reference.

This is the first time I've been interested in the story. Solid post. I could see something coming of this.

Thanks. I'm a fan of stats.

This is bull shite. patriots is a passing team. need to do fumble rate per running play
Posted on 1/23/15 at 11:36 pm to JohnHager913
Receivers and QB's don't fumble?

You've been had.
The Patriots have fumbled once every 67 offensive plays (once per game) since the beginning of the 2007 season, not once every 187 plays.
NFL stats per NFL.com and Pro football Reference websites:
Offensive Plays by New England:
2007 - 1080
2008 - 1126
2009 - 1189
2010 - 1078
2011 - 1002
2012 - 1072
2013 - 1094
2014 - 1053
Total offensive plays 2007 through 2014 seasons = 8494
Fumbles by New England per season:
2007 - 14
2008 - 17
2009 - 17
2010 - 9
2011 - 15
2012 - 14
2013 - 27
2014 - 16
Total fumbles 2007-2014 seasons = 129
8494 offensive plays divided by 129 fumbles = 1 every 67.39 offensive plays
By comparison, another bad-weather, winning team, 2007-2014 Green Bay Packers averaged 5 fumbles more per season than the Patriots did over that 8 year span. FIVE per season. One additional fumble for every 3+ games.

In addition, your PJMEDIA guy repeatedly quoted 2007 as the beginning year for studies numbers, while the Sharp Football website clearly states they only went back to the year 2010. The significance of this 3-year variance is that PJMEDIA attempted to link it with 2007 because both "Spygate" and the perfect 16-0 regular season took place in 2007, creating a scenario that the Patriots started "cheating" on ball pressure immediately after being caught doing the sideline filming. The numbers used by PJMEDIA in your link are for 5 years not 8 years as they claim, and they are incorrect anyway
Some of you can read just about anything on the internet and run with it, when you can just as easily verify the numbers for yourself. But then, it sounds so much more sinister to claim they fumbled once every 187 offensive plays than once every 67 offensive plays.

7 teams threw the ball more than NE in 2014. 9 threw more than NE in 2013. By your logic, those teams should fumble less than the Patriots.

I just deposited your sorry-arse thread in the dumpster and all you can come back with is that completely irrelevant, feeble response?
The joke's on you, bud.
(and btw, I didn't have to use "logic", I used hard data, official league statistics that anyone can access if they take the time.)

The assumptions are all of the teams are equal. This is not the case.
Before Tom Brady, patriots are penalized a lot for delay of game. Some people just smarter than others.
If you keep fumbling, BB will let you sit on the bench. Or even cut you.
Steelers lost games because they are dumb. I remember Branch caught two touchdowns splitting two safeties. The gap wad too big. That id 14 points.

Must be the deflated balls.
