Issues in recruiting ? Not as bad as most teams but could be better. Have you checked out our latest DL and LBs commits? You must not have. Chavis left the shelf pretty much empty before he left.
So I guess every name that was dropped on this board for a potential hire never had a bad year as a DC?

the next 3 weeks will tell a lot. Right now we have 1 DE, no DT's, and no LB's and very few prospects for getting any. It's looking very bleak in that area of recruiting at this time. He is starting in a big hole and with little time left. Although it's a bit unfair, let's see what he can do in 3 weeks. Even if he can land 3-4 mid level prospects, it would be a huge accomplishment. I will be watching and quietly judging his performance.

Alright, I am going to put aside my feelings towards this hire as far as a DC and stick to recruiting for a second.

Like you, I follow recruiting pretty closely and have for over a decade.

Here is my take on our defensive recruiting.

The reason we are light on DT and LB recruits this year is that the cupboard is not bare and 2016 is a bumper crop for DT in Louisiana.

DL:

LMFAO (3*)
Lacature (4*)
Godchaux (4*)
Valentine (4*)
Gilmore (4*)
Bain (4*)
Herron (4*)
Thomas (*3)

Several of these guys were considered 5 stars on various sites (e.g. Herron).

We also have some pretty highly recruited LBs, like Garrett (5*) and Beckwith (4*). We are not as deep here, but nothing to worry too much about.

Honestly, the biggest weakness right now (numbers wise) going forward is at DE:
Bower (4*)
Clark (4*)
Tuehema (3*)
Patterson (3*)
Neal (3*)

Steele is a good recruiter. He pulled in the no. 1 RB in the country for Alabama just this week (Damien Harris). And recruited some big name guys while at FSU, Clemson and Alabama.

That said, it is not fair to judge him on this class. He will have very little time work his magic.
