Yeah Costa Rica has more to do and your money goes pretty far there. And it's a visually stunning country.

Costa Rica is pretty. I found Panama to be just as pretty and less commercialized.

I'm going to Caneel Bay in March. USVI. I've never been but my girlfriend says it's awesome. 5 days, 4 nights fits in your budget. My budget was around 4k and I went over it a couple hundred. She got this for Christmas. I told her about it early and then she rented out a boat to do some island hopping one of the days as part of my Christmas. Looking forward to it.
Brah...make sure you rent a jeep if you haven't yet. Also make sure you rent a dinghy one day from these guys.

I'd take my chances on Costa Rica, spend a day or two in/around San José and the rest on the Pacific Coast. I like Quepos on the coast but you could fly in or out of Liberia Airport and that puts you in Guanacaste Province on the Northern Pacific Coast. I take Sansa flights in-country, driving any distance is highly discouraged as the roads are/can become abysmal.
USVI or BVI are nice too.

Cool. I appreciate all of the advice. I'm thinking Costa Rica too. How's the nightlife scene in San Jose? Are there some pretty safe areas for us gringos?

You could do Belize for under 5k and eat local food the whole time, ie no all inclusive.

I liked Costa Rica. You fly into San Jose, then it's a 4-5 hour drive to the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, or at least to Tamarindo. It's nice, but very rural. Certainly cheaper than Napa. Good food, decent beer.
If you go to Napa, you have innumerable wineries and superb restaurants to visit, plus you can stop in San Francisco, go to Muir Woods and up the PCH. Much more expensive, but more to do, plus you are in the US.
Ultimately, women do not seem to be as adventurous as us, so Napa has way more amenities designed to satisfy the ladies.

I was just thinking, "I'd pick Napa hands down".

Costa Rica, head to the northwest part- Guanacaste region. Nice beaches, lots to do, not a lot of touristas.

I've been to all three. Costa Rica by far, is the best. July is the rainy season, but you should be fine. October is when it rains almost 24/7. The dry season from January to March isn't as pretty and it gets very dusty in the NW. Aviod the carribean side at all costs. It sucks.

I used to live in guanacaste (Nosara). The NW coast is nice, and they should go there if they decide on costa rica, but the rainforest is further south. I'd go to more than one place, if it was my first time.

Friends of mine own and operate Noah's Little Arks. Taking a dinghy to some of the bays is a blast.

I've done Costa Rica for under $500 excluding airfare. You guys can go wild on 5K

Did Belize for 7 days at an optional all inclusive for less than 5k
Can choose to have all your meals onsite or take the short ride into the town. We did a mix depending on what we did that day.
Got any more details on this? I've always wanted to do Belize!

Yeah, when I went to CR, it was with 7 guys. The terrible roads, sketchy clubs and poverty in the towns we drove thru was not appalling to them. You might have 2-3 choices of restaurants in whatever small town you are in, none really great. Hotels are average, if new.
Napa on the other hand...

Yeah from what had I researched on San Jose before our trip .....don't venture out after dark, esp their downtown areas I felt safe in CR but remember it is a third world country. Theft is the biggest crime there so just be a smart tourist. Don't leave anything valuable in your rental car and don't be flashy in what you wear (tell your wife to leave the expensive jewelry at home) and make youself a target to be robbed. We stayed in San Jose only for the first and last nights of our trip(don't stay in one place.....go to many to experience all the different climates).

Nightlife sucks in San Jose for couples. It's also very dangerous unlike the rest of the country. I've seen 3 dead bodies on the streets of San Jose, while out at night.

Well the two nights we stayed there we just stayed at our hotel. First night we had traveled all day and got there in the evening and were leaving for Monteverde early the next morning. Coming back we got there in the afternoon but had an early flight home the next am so just hung out at the hotel bar/restaurant and relaxed and packed. So we didn't get to explore San Jose. But from what I saw from driving around.....I was ok with that. It would suck to stay in San Jose your whole trip and take day trips everywhere....,you'd be driving most of the time.

That was the best thing you could have done and you didn't miss much. The museums are small and kinda rinkydink. Driving in the city is a nightmare. I've been going there for 14 years and still get lost every time.
