Seeing all the people on Sunday hanging out by the airport there to watch planes land was interesting. It looked like some festival going on all the vendors and people there with all the bleachers by the fence .....,nope, just making a family day out of watching planes.

People used to do that in the US as well, even in the 60's and 70's. That's what makes 3rd world countries awesome. It's like stepping back 20 to 50 years.

My tentative plans are exactly this....fly into San Jose, stay 1 night, maybe head to the volcano region in the NW.....stay about 2 nights...then head to the coast in Guanacaste area....then fly home from there....
Also, if we would go to Napa, then we would bounce around SF, Napa, and other sites as well....

costa rica is going to be really unpleasant in july as will the yucatan. it will be hot, and rainy.
I would do Napa if you are stuck with July as the month.
Or hawaii. you can do hawaii for 5k.

Went there with girlfirend over holidays. Ate at Mustard's Grill, Redd, Coles Chophouse, Tra Vigne, Azurro, Kitchen Door, Eikos, The Thomas, ABC and several other spots. Finished w/brunch at Foreign Cinema in SF before getting on the plane. It is hard to come back here.
Best meal: wood fire roast dungeness crab at Tra Vigne.
We had some nice meals in Tamarindo. Good fresh ceviche, fresh fish, but nothing compared to NorCal. If OP wants to please his woman, Napa is the place to go.

The food is not what costa rica is known for, and shouldn't be. It's not that good.
Napa is so dry and depressing to me in July, but the food is much better than in costa rica. I guess it depends on what you and your wife want out of this vacation. I'd say many areas around Napa are killer. I'd explore around a bit if I was there. Mendocino, which is on the coast (hi way 1) is one of the most beautiful drives in the US. They also have excellent deals in July on sweet places to stay, right on the Pacific.

Hey my mom is from Costa Rica and I was born there and we go every year for Christmas to be with my family and we live in san isidro about 2 hours from San Jose. This was my wife and son first time going to Costa Rica and they loved it. We took our so to the beach for the first time and he had a blast. We went to Manuel Antonio outside of quepos and it is beautiful. The best beach I have been to so far in Costa Rica. From San Jose it is 2 hours to get there. They have good food there and a lot of nice souvenirs to buy. We went there the day after Christmas and 2 days later rapper ludacris had his honeymoon there and here are some pictures he took there.

My wife's 40th is in April and I'm trying to plan a 4 day weekend somewhere. We have been to Napa area (if you go spend most of your time in Sonoma/Healdsburg areas). We rented a house with another couple and had a blast even though she was pregnant at the time. We might go back there.
I'd love to go to Costa Rica, she has always been worried about roads etc. If you go I'd go hit up one of the nice resorts around the volcanos.

This is where we went in October for our anniversary. They have a bunch of wineries in Anderson Valley(20 minutes from Mendocino). We stayed in Ft Bragg right by the coast and drove up to the redwoods forest, to the wineries and to explore all the beaches in the area(Mendocino was only 10 minutes away from Ft Bragg). That area is a beautiful drive....you feel like you are driving in a car commercial.
