Minn Kota vs Motorguide

The trolling motor on my boat is ancient. It's a Motorguide bow mount, 55# thrust, still works fine. But it's a hand steer. So it's time to change it out.
I've thinking about going with the MK Maxxum 70#. Would love to put a fortrex on the boat, but at $1300 Plus the smallest fortrex is 80# and might be a little overkill.
Is there any big differences between the two brands? Any recommendations? Best foot control?
TIA

Minn Kota. No reason, just what we have always used.

We have Minn Kotas and where we fish it's probably 10-1 MK over MG. Might be just a regional thing though.
ETA- the little boat came with a MK freshwater on it so we left it. It's an '08 and still works fine, has never been in freshwater, all salt.

Always had motor guides. No issues.

Do all the foot controls operate in a similar manner? I noticed some are different than others. I guess I just don't understand how they steer.

I find motor guide to be more sensitive to the touch which i dont like. Ive always liked our MK.

I've had both recently and prefer the MK. Mostly because I fish areas with moderate to heavy grass and I've found the MK props to be more weedless.

What size boat and what type of hull?

I've had both and prefer mg. mk mounts with all that plastic bothers me.

My Bass Tracker came with a MG but I've always preferred MK.

I do like the sound of a more weedless prop. I'll probably go with the Minn Kota Maxxum.
Just talked to my brother. That's exactly what he has on his boat. He said he has no complaints.

The new motor guides are plastic also

Minn Kota. Had one for like 10 years with no problems. When it finally quit, we bought a motor guide. The head was broken within two weeks.

MK composite plastic is much better than MG's trying to attach a plastic head to a metal shaft. Recipe for disaster in chop. There's a product you can buy to keep it from breaking, but I'm not really into having to spend more money on a $1500 trolling motor just to make sure it works.

I've had a few of both, and they both suck.
Good luck, all the same.

I had a motorguide once it didn't fit my needs in the marsh (muck and cabbage), i swapped to the pointed style minn kota in the early 90's and never looked back since.

MK seems to do better where there is lots of vegetation. I'm about to replace my foot control unit with an I pilot.

Grew up fishing in a boat with a Motorguide. My boat currently has a Minn Kota.
No difference noticed by me. Both great motors.
