Hunter and Mingo have 3-4 written all over them. So does Valentine. But do the rest? For the most part: no. I've never been a fan of 3-4. In the NFL it is more prominent because of passing is the main attack and running is only an avenue to keep the defense honest while allowing the LBs to drop into coverage. As far as college is concerned you have teams that run 50 times a game and teams that pass 50 times a game.

Yes I know... My point was that it's hard to recruit 17-18 year old kids to fit a system. You have no idea how they will develop / grow as they mature. I mean you have a guy you think is a perfect fit for a 3-4 OLB, and then he gains a lot of weight and muscle and becomes a DE. And you could get a Safety that is just a stud... But becomes 230lbs by hir Jr. year. I mean look at Mingo. He has a great frame, just had a tough time adding weight. You have no idea how a kid will grow and mature as he gets older. Some guys come in fast, add weight, and become slow.
And I could think of other guys suited for a 3-4. Anthony Johnson as a 3-4 DE. Brockers as the NT. And Bennie Logan, consideing his success at that spot with Philly. Lavar Edwards as a 3-4 DE. Kwon could have played there too if needed. Ego could have been a DE in the 3-4. Godchaux as a DE. Etc, Etc.
And I'm not saying we should have ran a 3-4 or anything. Like I said in my previous post, I haven't had any issue with our D. Just saying that we have had a lot of guys that could have played in either. And coming out of high school, you have no idea what system someone will fit in 3 years.

Not necessarily. In Pete Carrol's 4-3 under defense, Mingo and Hunter are idea "LEOs" or "Elephants' 4-3 DEs:
"The LEO can be a little bit smaller than a normal DE and Pete Carroll tends to like a more athletic and versatile body type for his Elephant position; a guy that can speed rush the QB but also react quick enough to control his gap. Must also be able to drop back into coverage occasionally in zone blitz situations."
Sounds like people I know.
LSU runs a variant of a Miami 4-3 over from Jimmy Johnson's days at Okla St, which carried over to the University of Miami, which carried over to a successful run with the Dallas Cowboys.
Miami 4-3 is characterized by small defensive personnel that attack gaps. LBs are safety size. Swarming to the ball. Simple to run and relies on athletes versus specific skill set (though if you have an athlete and a skill set its going to be really effective). It was developed/refined at Okla St. since J. Johnson could not always recruit talent/skill set.
I would like to see us go toward what Pete Carroll did at USC and does at Seattle, his base 4-3 under. Works well against the run and designed to pressure the passer.
