so IYO is it better to use a private torrent site or any site with a paid VPN service?

Just in terms of preventing the ISP nastygram for piracy, either option is effective. I use IPTorrents heavily without a VPN and haven't received any letters. Likewise, if I have to use KickassTorrents or piratebay, I use privateinternetaccess VPN and haven't had an issue. Prior to getting a VPN and a private tracker, I'd received two warning letters from Cox within a two-week span. From a technical standpoint, VPN will hide you most effectively.

Don't want you to think I'm ignoring your question, but this is far out of my area of expertise. I do not dabble in illegally obtaining files via torrents.
