California doesn't have affirmative action. Officially anyway.
Oh yes, they do. But it's circumvention of court rulings. IE, artificial constructions like 'striving.'

Not race based affirmative action. The number of black, non-athletes at UC schools is very small.
I wish that my state did better at this.

Yes, it is race based. The small number of blacks at UC schools and the practice of aff action are not mutually exclusive.

There's a little more to it than is implied in your title and link. I'm not saying that I agree with the protest but you don't need to misrepresent something to make a point.
LINK
That link certainly tries to put some pretty lipstick on the story. Doesn't really dispute anything anyone has said in this thread though. One person "chose" to capitalize the word "indigenous" throughout a paper and was corrected. That person was wrong. Sorry.

It essentially is. They just don't call it that. They say they look at "other" circumstances that the student was in that may make him disadvantaged. The data showed that when blacks and asians had the same qualifications, blacks won out almost every time. Many asians were denied that would have gotten admitted had those black students with lower scores had been admitted.
This is race-based admissions. They just call it the "holistic approach." NYC does something similar with it's magnet schools because blacks complained that it is racist when you just look at academic performance. Asians were getting all the minority spots.

So? All they have to do is make slightly lower grades and test scores than their white, hispanic, or asian counterparts. It is not the school's fault that blacks do not perform as well in academics. Favoring people based on race is not helping society.

You are correct and it's not just UCLA. Engineering grad schools in Calif still use Aff action designed to create a higher bar for Asians and a lower bar for blacks, hispanics and females. We need diversity. For some reason.
And after they graduate most of them still say, "I ain't got no...", "We was..." and "Me and my brother was...".
This pisses me off because my brother got 100% on the English 101 final exam which is almost impossible to do, yet, he couldn't get a job anywhere after he left college because they were hiring only blacks and women at that time.

To me the irony is their statement was probably proof read by a white student. If their point is poor grammar is acceptable for minorities, I'd a expected something more along the lines of "we bez tired o gettin dissed gainst by the man."

Blacks are just as intelligent as their white, Hispanic, or Asian counterparts.
They just refuse to learn the "white man's education" because they don't want to be ridiculed by their homies for becoming an Uncle Tom.

That is some awesome logic.

I thought this would be a case of white and Asian students protesting that they were graded or docked points while the black students just had their papers. Corrected and not docked points
I had way too much faith in People. To think a student would protest because they were graded on an assignment is jaw dropping.

A resume with spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors goes straight into the garbage.
Once again, liberal idiots enabling people along the way to poverty because they didn't learn the fundamental skills to get work.
At least somewhat glad to see our local Liberal Idiots not going along with this nonsense.

Now that I know you have your head screwed on backwards, your opinion about the logic of anything I say is irrelevant and meaningless.
Go troll your arse hole!

There has NEVER been a job posted that ever demanded good grades in English 101. None.

So the students actually want lower standards for their black peers?

What could be more racist than implying your fellow black students are incapable of learning and using proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc?!

Its not grades that matter, its what you did or didn't learn. Few jobs require perfect grammar or punctuation but someone lacking the ability to communicate clearly and precisely is called a laborer.

Sweet baby Jesus I want to believe you misspelled "grammar" on purpose, but I just can't honestly believe you're deep enough for even that elementary level of irony.
