I was 21 when he died. He was the pope since before I was born. My knowledge of him as pope was limited and I was too young to have formed a reasonable opinion (few have the proper life experiences at age 21 to have any business having an opinion on such things). What I know of him now is that he helped bring down the USSR, the bastion of communism, the greatest evil of our time. I do not know of what else he might have done.

If he advocated for socialism and climate change policies, then I will need to adjust my opinion of John Paul II.

But you've said that the church has no business influencing governments. Did you mean that the Pope has no business taking stands you disagree with?
