So, the wife and I were discussing trying to watch Seinfeld recently. Neither of us has ever actually watched the show as anything more than background noise, or seen a random clip here or there.

So, I'm coming to you guys for help. I don't want to try and power through the first season and possibly run in to some rough episodes of the show trying to find it's groove and end up giving up on it. I'd like to get some recommendations of favorite episodes that we should watch to see how great the show is, and then start it from scratch.

What are some of you guys' favorite episodes?

Bubble Boy
The Hamptons
The Contest
Junior Mint
Kenny Roger's Roasters
The Merv Griffin Show

Off the top of my head. All of Season 4 is pretty solid, as is Season 8.

How have you never seen Seinfeld? Its one of the most ubiquitous shows of all time. You would have had to go out of your way to not watch it.

I believe at the 5 and 10 year marks they have a couple of episodes that give have clips from that time span of the best moments. You really wont have context to go with the clips but I believe that these episodes should be enough to see if you would enjoy the show or not.

Watch the one episode called "The Boyfriend". Its the one were George dates the daughter of an unemployment officer to stay on assistance but loses the benefits when the girl breaks up with him.

I also believe its the episode were Jerry tells George "You know, you do more work to stay on unemployment then you would at an actual job".

Seinfeld isn't one of the those serialized shows that you have to catch on and ride. You just catch some random episodes here and there when the reruns are showing. Probably some time in the next week the Festivus/Human fund episode will be replaying. I'd try to catch that.

I've seen every episode 100 times and I still find myself laughing at the same parts time after time. I can't explain why I continue to watch it but I just do. I literally stop channel surfing when I come across it.

Jerry is a terrible comedian. Elaine is a slut that can't dance worth a shite. George is a short, stocky failure at life. Kramer is just...Kramer. One of my all-time favorites.

Crackle rotates in and out a dozen or so eps at a time for free if no one has mentioned that.

Watch The Marine Biologist. If you don't laugh at George's speech at the end, you won't like Seinfeld and likely have no soul.

The first season was sort of a slow burn...it's better retroactively because you get the characters more.

Season 2 on is just all together amazing

I consider myself somewhat of a seinfeld fanatic. For someone in your shoes..I'll be honest, don't watch the first season. I love every single episode ever of seinfeld (except one), but the first few seasons are admittedly a little lackluster for the casual viewer. Considering it's the greatest sitcom of all time, I would imagine you'll go into a series watch expecting greatness right off the bat. If you start with S1 E1, you're not gonna get that. The fantastic thing about seinfeld is it's not like Arrested Development or LOST where you HAVE to see former episodes for everything to really make sense. Each episode is basically a standalone, with the exception of a few series-long themes.

Season 3 is when it kinda starts to realize its potential, season 4 is when it really started to take off and people said "holy shite, this show is incredible", and every season following (5 through 9) honestly (and I'm not saying that as a fanboy, I'm serious) doesn't have a single bad episode. We're talking about 120ish straight episodes of absolute gold.

Soooo...it kinda depends on your level of commitment. If you have the patience of Job, start from the top and trudge through. If you're moderately patient but still wanna start with a bang, start with season 3 (but still be aware that it's still somewhat finding its legs). If you're not very patient, just start with season 4. If you have no patience at all, just pick any random episodes from seasons 5-9 and watch them.

The only somewhat noteworthy thing that you'd need to know from earlier seasons (if you don't watch from the start) is that Jerry and Elaine used to date, but it didn't work out so now they're just friends.

It's not nearly as funny as people make it out to be. It's good, but there are other shows that will make you laugh more.
