The flags are the issue here. It's sad after every deep ball or big play I'm looking for a flag.

It's gone from AWW YEAH AWESOME PLAY! or FUUUUUUUUUUCK MY TEAM SUCKS to is there a flag? No? AWW YEAH AWESOME PLAY! or FUUUUUCK MY TEAM SUCKS.

Agreed. Used to be entertaining. Now it seems to be very political and bitchy.

And they’ll still probably complain about the fricking Helmet Catch anyway.

Nope, they will be a first round exit.

I think the Redskins, Riley Cooper and Incognito witch hunts really soured people on Deadspin...They had to have a combined 3,000 articles whining about those topics and preaching about ho brave and PC they were for taking down evil racists

Meh, I think both the college and NFL product are nowhere near as good as they used to be.

NFL has sucked this year. Too much parity. I 100% agree about the flags.

Fantasy football is brilliant though. That alone has increased ratings not roger godell. Which is why I hate godell even more. I could be NFL commissioner and still see an exponential increase in ratings yet the owners seem to believe roger is the only person responsible for the success.

Yeah the last three weeks I've been watching Rugby on Sundays instead of the NFL. I still watch the highlights though.

The sports world be better if Deadspin were to disappear.

quote:

- Half of the NFC playoff field could be led by Ryan Lindley, Mark Sanchez, and Derek Anderson.

Injuries happen in all sports. One of the college football playoffs is on their third string QB.

quote:

- One of the two best teams in the NFC (Green Bay or Seattle) could conceivably still miss the playoffs in favor of an NFC South champ with a sub-.500 record.

We know that the NFC South being so bad is anomalous. No playoff system is perfect. It generally speaks to how tough it is to make the playoffs.

quote:

- The most heartwarming story in all of football this season has been the unexpected good fortune of the Dallas fricking Cowboys. There is nothing uplifting about Jerry Jones being visibly happy. I fricking hate the Cowboys and I am only happy when they find themselves repeatedly humiliated on national television.

Just because a team you hate is doing well does not make the season bad. I guess I should hate the NFL because the Packers are loaded.

quote:

- Two of the league’s most exciting young passers (Kaep and RGIII) had their careers implode and may never recover.

Again, this has not really impacted the quality of the season. Declining performances happen literally every year.

quote:

- The league’s most celebrated rookie (Johnny Manziel) is fricking terrible.

He may very well suck, but he has been mostly on the back burner until his first start. There is also one game he will be terrible. It was one game. By that standard, Aaron Rodgers is terrible (going 17-42 and 0/2 against the Bills). Obviously, Rodgers has an amazing pedigree, but to assume Johnny Manziel will always be shite is just asinine.

quote:

- The league’s best running back missed virtually the entire season because he likes whipping his children in the scrotum with a tree branch.

Yeah, this one sucked for me personally, but I still enjoy the NFL. Sadly, Peterson is the not the first athlete to be a complete dumbass.

quote:

- The entire first month of the season was upstaged by a video of a dude knocking his wife out in an elevator. (By the way, we are now at the stage of the Ray Rice scandal where most people have stopped giving a shite. Roger Goodell is never gonna admit that he saw the tape or knew what was on it and any time I read a new report about inconsistencies in his testimony, my eyes glaze over and I need an interpreter to explain the details.)

Believe or not, people love talking about this shite. It is what it is, but Rice, Peterson, Johnny Football, etc are what people want to talk about. I am sure Deadspin reports a shite ton more on this hot topic issues instead of why Eli bounced back this season or how the Cleveland ground game fell apart when Alex Mack went down, etc.

quote:

- The best thing that happened this season was a touchdown catch by a dude on a 5-9 team in a game that his team went on to lose.

It was an ill catch. Does it count less or make it less impressive because the Giants are lousy?

quote:

-Bill Simmons bragged, “I’m probably in the 99.5 percentile for Most NFL Football Watched.”

This is a shitty piece of evidence even for a hack article.

quote:

- FOX brought in a UFC dude to announce a game. He noted that Norv Turner was thrilled to be working with Jim Caldwell. The two men work for separate teams.

This was hilariously awful. Honestly, it made the game more memorable for me. He has been relieved of his duties of calling NFL games. I think the FOX Robot could have done a better job.

quote:

- The Rams and the Raiders are probably playing their final season in their respective hometowns and haven’t had the courtesy to tell anyone yet.

How does that make it a bad season?

quote:

- Tonight’s Titans/Jaguars game (both teams are 2-12) is emblematic of a Thursday night schedule that went out of its way to be optional viewing. The fact that Phil Simms (“And if you’re the Titans, you’re saying, Hey! My goodness!”) has been there for every last one of them makes the venture only more damnable.

It is the Thursday night schedule. The game sucks, but it is still better than the option of no football. I certainly prefer over the riveting Thursday matchups of Wake Forest vs. North Carolina.

quote:

- At one point, Sunday Night Football featured nine straight 20+-point blowouts. And the non-blowout games haven’t been much better.

Damn, they should have rigged the games. Obviously, that is certainly disappointing. This is a legitimate gripe about the season's quality, but there was no way to prevent this. It was randomness and bad luck in some cases.

quote:

-The best season ever by an individual defensive player has been wasted on a team that deliberately went into the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick as its QB, and then couldn’t even keep him healthy.

This may not even be Watt's best season ever, but why is wasted? The fact that the Texans are average does not make Watt any less exciting to watch.

quote:

- The flags. The fricking flags. My God, the flags.

The changes in rules are certainly too reactionary and suck in some respects. There are legit gripes in this article. This is one of them.

quote:

- The NFL’s powers-that-be are actually PLEASED with the statistical increase in penalty flags. Here was Roger Goodell climbing out of his fallout shelter in October to address the situation: "There was a good report on the state of the game, the pace of the game, the instant replay system that has I think improved, not only the consistency of calls, but also I think on the pace of the game." There is not a creature on Earth that believes an increase of stoppages in play somehow makes for a better-paced sporting event.

Agreed. Maybe you guys should watch soccer instead.

quote:

- The league’s commissioner has essentially become a burden upon the entire league the way Dan Snyder is a burden to his own team. Goodell is like a terrible owner, only he owns everything and will never be ousted. He could shoot a dolphin on live television and Bob Kraft would be like, "That man has integrity."

Goodell sucks. We know, but it is not him like one man can single-handedly run the enjoyment of the league unless you are Fox Mulder.

quote:

And the worst part is that, at the end of this, the fricking Patriots are gonna win another championship. They’re clearly the best team. It’s horrible. A decent batch of playoff games could redeem this whole enterprise, but no … no, a bunch of ungrateful Boston fans are gonna celebrate yet another title. And they’ll still probably complain about the fricking Helmet Catch anyway.

Again, disliking a team that wins it all does not invalidate a season.

The sad thing is that most everyone on here agrees with him. Sundays in the NFL are fricking great. I love the NFL, and I would certainly take football over no football. If it sucks so much, then stop watching, but they do not care because it is the dominant sport in America as $10+ billion enterprise annually.

That is pretty much what I did. Can't tell you the last time I watched a full NFL game.

Love college football though.

I've been too caught up in fantasy football so I am not sure
But if I take a step back, the season has been OK definitely not great. Hopefully the playoffs are awesome.

I will honestly never get the appeal of college football compared to the NFL when you are not at the game live.

The quality of play is just so much better. College is full of kickers who cannot kick, quarterbacks who cannot throw, and an insane amount of blowouts. Obviously my opinion is the minority on here, but I feel like so many people want to hate on the NFL because they think they are edgy and the Saints suck.
