I do not get it at all. Illiterate children in 12th grade wanting to go to four-year colleges? Really?

We did away with vo-tech and other programs because tracking was considered racist...yeah, our country is stupid.

Where does this end? College tuition is no longer worth it's value in many circumstances (not all obviously). It is over-saturated and students begin their working careers owing an average of $28k (student loans)...or a full year of career pay after taxes (on average).

Schools need to focus on creating functional citizens and not college-ready. There is no shame in making $50,000/year working a blue-collar and starting the workforce at age 19 as opposed to starting at 22 and making even less. working a "college degree job."

I think the mentality that all kids had to go to college started around the late 80s and grew through the 90s into the 2000s.

Do you have any idea how many vo-tech schools are in the State of Louisiana?

College for everyone is a one size fits all mentality.

What ever happened to diversity?

Carpenters, plumbers, electricians and mechanics, etc., are needed and are valuable.

The problem is that blue-collar jobs are trivialized as what you do because you didn't go to college. It's the stupidest thing, since I know a lot of bartenders, waitresses and hairdressers with some extremely impressive history and literature degrees. The more we move away from being a proud country of makers towards this country of service workers, the views aren't going to get better. Globalization has also made the career job in the factory nearly impossible, so I think there is a fear by parents that an education is necessary to stay competitive in a market that does not guarantee a job that doesn't require class-taught skills.

When that game "LIFE" came out. If you didn't go to college in that game, you were broke and lost. In other words, you sucked at LIFE.

Not everyone is cut out for college, I agree with that. But, to say that college tuition isn't worth it, is a broad generalization. There are many careers that require individuals with a college degree (or two). Many of these careers make a salary that would justify the cost of college. I think I spent less than 50k (maybe a bit more) on two degrees. I'd definitely say that they've already paid off (5 years out).

When you increase the supply of something, it's value goes down. No reason it should be different for college degrees.

How many careers are out there for a 19 year old with no skills or college degree to earn 50,000 a year besides working offshore?

It's a very American idea, and I hate it (I'm in education).

Maybe half the students that are in college SHOULD actually be there.

There seems to be this big misconception that if you don't have a $60k salary or whatever after college then it was all a big failure.

The "value" of a college degree doesn't come from how much your salary is after graduation. It is the education and college experience you get from it. The only people that seem to get that are the ones that attended (and actually graduated) college.

If you don't care much about the "college experience" and just want to learn a hard skill and make money then by all means go to a trade school.

I grew up under the impression that U HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE. U HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE. U HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE. From my family.

I went to college and couldnt get anywhere with a degree (like many others).

So my dad told me "why won't you go out into a plant and learn a trade".

My close friends were in the same boat as me. Working dead in jobs and we decided that we all want to get into the industrial field.

We're all happy now.
