My life is pretty good, it could quickly become hell if someone were to break into my house and attempt to harm myself, my wife, or my children.
I live in a good area, feel quite safe in my home, just believe in being prepared.
For the original question, depends on the my mood. 1911 on nightstand usually (also my carry piece) but I have a few loaded pistols stashed that my wife or I could grab in a pinch.
Shotgun is a great option, my home defense one is always loaded and ready for action.

I have a home defense 870 and it'll hold six shells. Still not leaving the chamber empty to let someone hear my shotgun rack.
And I 100% it's not going to be a shootout in the house, but don't want to intentionally short myself one shell, either with chamber empty or ejecting one, just to scare someone with the noise.
Once again, hopefully my home alarm will scare them off long before they get to my bedroom door.

In NE Jackson we have a little ring of thugs who are on the catch and release program. Cops arrest them, DA drops charges cuz they get the right lawyer or a lazy arse judge sets a low bond and they are out again. Anyway, thanks to them, I do sleep with a gun under one of my pillows.

This is what everyone should do. I have a 12 gauge that sounds vicious when I pump it. If necessary at close range the intruder would be fricked......

If the gun is loaded to full capacity and you are racking the slide (either to chamber a shell or just for effect) there is going to be the same number of shells in either situation, which is one less than the gun is capable of holding.

Little ones can make it into and on top of all kinds of stuff. Why take a chance they can make it to the top of the closet? Buy a small safe if you have long guns and a pistol lock box if that is all they have. If you have small kids your firearms need to be secured.
As soon as you feel they are ready start teaching gun safety right away. Don't make them scared just educate them and take them shooting. Teach them the dangers in your house but also there friends. Make them understand that if they are ever at a friends house and see an unsecured gun not to play with it.
