Hint* why does West End have that really wide neutral ground?
Sorry, I meant 90. Or at least the bridge. Was it anything west of Lee Circle? In which case that changes some things.

I have a really old Map of NOLA. Tivoli Circle has always been in the area we call downtown or more specifically it's at the boundary of the CBD and the warehouse district. There used to be a canal that ran from the river to the lake, the ponchartrain expressway was built on top of it.
Another canal was to be built separating the "new" city from the old city, but it was never built and the land set aside for it became canal street.
Uptown annexed the Jefferson Parish city of Carrolton which included Hollygrove. It is uptown, but it's not "Uptown".

Lee Circle.
Pree 1884 maps show it as Tivoli circle, so if he were to look at old maps that is the name used.
In 1884 when the monument was built the circle was changed to Lee Circle.

Are you 100% certain it ran all the way to the river?

a long long time ago. But then it was filled in, and ended in a basin. Hence the name "NEW Basin canal"
I think before that it had some French name.
But yes, in the real old days of sailing, you couldn't vome up the Mississippi in a ship, you had to go through lake borgne and then into Ponchartrain and then take Bayou St john into the city. At that time the Bayou was much bigger and was a natural Lake to river water way.
People dug many news canals, the New Basin being the largest.
It's end was actually at the foot of Rampart st.
But Canals started to get filled in en mass when the Yellow fever epidemic broke out. Though the New Basin was around partially until the middle of the 20th century.

Carrolton is Uptown.

Central City is Uptown.
I consider anything in Orleans up river from downtown (from near Claiborne to the river) to be part of Uptown.

Learn something new everyday. Had never heard of a Canal that connected all the way to the lake that went past Rampart St (hence the name)

What if it was once part of Jefferson Parish ?

there was another way from the lake to the river that we learned about in Louisiana History, that has since been closed up. I think it's through Lake Maurepas, and by Tickfaw.
But yes, when the walls (Ramparts) to the city were built, canals butted up to them.
I know one of the canals became Esplanade avenue, I think the Carondolet canal.
I need to find my book. I have a New Orleans History book for the 1880's with come cool maps and stuff in it.

It was up Maurepas - Amite River - Bayou Manchac to what is now Willow Glen power plant.
Bayou Manchac was actually dredged to help larger ships and was only available through parts of the year.
The Willow Glen site was where New Orleans was supposed to be founded, but through some reason (I think distance) was unintentionally built where it sits today on the high ground. I will see if I can find the documentation to back that up, it has been years since I went looking for it.

Wasn't Claiborne a canal?

There's an old legend that says one of Columbus' ships made it up into Bayou Manchac. It's the source of the name for the Santa Maria development in BR.
