I forgot to post the tribute on November 10th (when it sank), but it still deserves some remembering.

quote:

The gales of November came early 39 years ago, when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank beneath Lake Superior's churning waters on Nov. 10, 1975, taking the lives of 29 people.

quote:

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
in the rooms of her ice-water mansion.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams;
the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
And farther below Lake Ontario
takes in what Lake Erie can send her,
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
with the Gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the "Maritime Sailors' Cathedral."
The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee."
"Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead
when the gales of November come early!"

Ole Miss used to have a basketball player named Edmond Fitzgerald.

Edited to remove the emoticon. RIP to the lost.

The Edmund Fitzgerald gets overlooked each year because of the USMC birthday and then Veterans Day on 10 Nov and 11 Nov. This must have been a horrible death for the crew. Thanks for posting.

Just a delightful mix of era specific pop rock and sea shanty music right there.

Watched a special on the history channel or something about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Pretty fascinating stuff, but that has to be one of the toughest ways to go...

You're missing a few lines in those lyrics there...

I love that song. Growing up I always thought it was some long ago tragedy. When I started researching it the recentness of it blew my mind

The wind in the wires, made a tattletale sound, when a wave broke over the railing...

To anyone who's been on a boat in rough seas - those lyrics are unbelievably classic.

That's a beautiful poem. Someone should make a song out of it.

It's amazing that the crew wrote that song during the storm as the ship was sinking.

Just kidding. Great song. VERY interesting maritime history. Sad tragedy. Thanks for posting this reminder.

The song always made it sound like something that happened in the days of yore. I was surprised, when I found out it happened in the mid 70s and the song came out not long afterward.

ETA, Didn't read the thread. funny to see this already addressed. I guess I'm not the only one.

Interesting that it talks about the November weather coming early and being a factor. Here we are this year experiencing severe cold on/near the anniversary...
