Former Magazine Popeye's becoming Izzo's

The Baton Rouge-based Mexican chain Izzo's Illegal Burrito will open in the former Popeyes location at 4041 Magazine St.

Construction began Thursday (Nov. 7). The restaurant should be open before Mardi Gras.

"Magazine has been on our radar ever since we opened our first store in 2001 by LSU," emailed co-founder Ozzie Fernandez. "We are very excited about the Magazine location and becoming neighbors and friends with the local community."

The Popeyes closed last March.

Izzo's offers made-to-order burritos, tacos, nachos and salads.

"This store will feature a nice covered patio," Fernandez said, "and we plan to roll out a Mexican breakfast featuring some of my family’s favorites -- like housemade chorizo and egg tacos and slow-roasted barbacoa."
