Lots of conflicting information online...arguing for both sides. Most diet colas have Aspartame as one of the ingredients. It is better to just drink regular soda laced with sugar rather than deal with this stuff? What say the OT?
quote:

Aspartame (APM; /'æsp?rte?m/ or /?'sp?rte?m/) is an artificial, non-saccharide sweetener used as a sugar substitute in some foods and beverages. In the European Union, it is codified as E951. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. It was first sold under the brand name NutraSweet; It was first synthesized in 1965 and the patent expired in 1992.

From my understanding sucralose is made from sugar. I've switched from aspartame-flavored sodas to these (which include the Diet Coke Splenda and Diet Rite lines). They taste fine to me, but the verdict is out as to whether any diet drink triggers a hormonal/insulin response in the body.

I've tried to cut back on sodas, but sometimes I just have to have one with a meal. One of my only treats since restricting sugar/carbs 3 months ago.

don't touch that or high fructose corn syrup. Get the bottles of coke with real sugar.

Edit: or Mexican cokes as were mentioned earlier in the thread

It's no big deal. You can find people claiming anything can cause cancer, etc.

I am always leery of substances that are totally synthesized in a lab with no basis in nature at all...however, it has been around long enough to where I am pretty sure there is really nothing wrong with it...

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that if there were any valid health concerns with it, the sugar industry would have pretty quickly pointed it out...

Recent studies link it to weight gain and insulin resistance.....plus there's the Alzheimer's/cancer stuff. Why not just eat real food?

If you don't consume a truckload in a short amount of time you will have no issue. There many things worse for you than aspartame.
