While the service tech is doing his thing and your just siting and waiting in anxiety on how much it's gonna cost to repair. Just had this happen. Sucks.

Having it done in August (when it seems, I usually have to get mine done) rather than November.

Air conditioner repairmen are pure evil.

A 10 dollar part that cost 200 dollars to fix. ??
What really sucks is paying "business rates" for a single person business. My business is 1 person office but since It's a "business" I have to pay 20 more dollars an hour.

yeah, i had a year old unit that only had a month of use on it that wouldn't crank up last July (I made it through June in Atlanta with no A/C!). Anyway, i did some basic stuff and diagnostics and stupidly ruled out the fuses without testing them (couldn't find multimeter).
f-tard who installed it sent some even f-tardier guy out to look at it. i helped him pulled the fuses and cut off power (he was going to pull them hot), I supplied replacement fuses when we determined that's what it was, and then I thought well, this was just a courtesy call since it had been less than a year since install. the dude didn't invoice me or anything.
get a bill via email two weeks later, for $90+ which included a charge for fuses! he took them off but I eventually paid for the service call.
Cooool Story Bro.
Seems like every winter/summer i can't get my stuff to crank up. i turned on my furnace monday for the first time and it refused to light. luckily it has good self-diagnostics and i just fiddled with the pressure switch connection and saved $100+ and half a day waiting for Jesco to show up.

Our outside unit went out mid July in DFW when it was 102.
My neighbor's Mexican friend fixed it, we later noticed the serial numbers are scratched off on the new unit.

Yeah, I've been there. Sorry to hear about that. Take my advice, once this is over get you a good home warranty.

If he is only working outside and doesn't have any tanks hooked up then it's not too bad.
(but people should learn how to fix and diagnose fan issues, IMO this is where a $7 part saves you $250)
As long as the compressor is fine and you don't need a ton of R-22, then your repair shouldn't be too much.

Yes. Having the technician tell you that you need to replace the entire system

I used to have a home warranty... never paying for one of those again!! The repairmen that they use are people that probably wouldn't be in business if it weren't for the home warranty companies using them (cheap rates). The first time I had someone come out to fix my oven, the repairman was like "wolf... I've never heard of that brand... must be an off brand or something and that's why it's broken." I giggled, thanked him for his time, and asked him to leave.
