It may also depend on your deductible and if you have ever met it.

Of course. It is pretty high and I went over. Had skin cancer removed right next to my left eye. 32 stitches on my face.
But, my company has a policy that of out of pocket payments before the deductible is met are refunded 100%.
You too Coastie.

That makes sense.
Having a deductible and paying out of pocket is different from being uninsured.

They figure that most will ignore the refund policy. Not me..
Very different.

this surgeon required a $500 deposit and said she would be refunded $ not used
I don't know what kind of surgeon your friend is getting for $500, and $500 is not substantial.

God forbid someone wants to get paid for performing a service

Seems to be standard procedure now--insurance or not. My wife and her co-worker recently had a surgery and both had to pay half (minus insurance payment) up front.

He's running a business what would you expect?

Wife had surgery yesterday and we have Blue Cross/Blue Shield with a $550 deductible. I had to pay the clinic $642 at check in. I have never done that before in my life

Something just seems odd here.
Look at it from the doctor's POV.
Someone random comes in who is uninsured. If he does the procedure, he is legally liable for anything that might go wrong. For example, if she's on meds that she doesn't tell him about that changes what he needs to do.
Think about it.
Frankly, he ought to be asking for more than $500 IMHO.

Welcome to Obamacare. She is breaking the law without insurance. You're lucky someone saw her in the first place. I would lol if you get a refund. Be prepared to pay much more if she needs any type of procedure done.

Doctors gonna doctor. Gotta pay for that 'Benz, boat, country club dues, ex-wife.
Insurance is cutting back on reimbursements. Gotta make it up somewhere.

That is substantial for a college student paying her own way.
And probably all the more reason for him to collect up front. Doctors get stiffed all the time.

Surgery costs are very high. $500 isn't very high imo.
That won't even get you 4 minutes in surgery.

They always do this with people who don't have insurance. No way they would pay after surgery.
