That is probably the most confusing contract extension I have ever seen. 42 million for burks?!?
"But the cap is going to explode in a few years" is the excuse I keep reading for these overpays. I don't get how/why a larger cap should excuse bad deals. The better run teams still won't have deals like that on their books, regardless of where the cap is at.

I don't get what Utah is doing. Max deal for Gordon Hayward. Huge deal for Burks. Huge deal for Favors. Kanter is probably getting big money. And they're still terrible.

They're going all in on their young core but it's pretty clear that their young core is mediocre at best..

4/42 isn't bad for Burks. It's what Holiday got in his extension and more than DeRozan got in his. Both moves were widely panned, now seen as good contracts. Through year's, he has put up similar, if not better numbers than either guy.

Burks is big, able to get into the paint, and finish at the rim. A lot to like. He continues to improve and he could get a bigger offer than that this summer from teams needing wing help and also flush with cash. Then it's another Hayward situation.

Favors was smart. A young, defensive big at $12M through 2018 is a good bet. I bet they let Kanter walk; he can't play with Favors and they have Gobert to back him up. They will be playoff dark horses next year and maybe better after that. They really need Exum or Burke to emerge as a star.

ETA: Klay at $17.5M makes Burks at $10 look a lot better.
