The Beirut Barracks Bombings (October 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon) occurred during the Lebanese Civil War when two truck bombs struck separate buildings housing United States and French military forces—members of the Multinational Force (MNF) in Lebanon—killing 299 American and French servicemen. An obscure group calling itself 'Islamic Jihad' claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Friend of mine's cousin died in that attack (Vermilion Parish). Last year while in DC for the MCM, we visited Arlington and found the memorial to those killed.

At the site, there was a bottle of whiskey (among other things) -- don't remember what kind -- with a note from a friend of one of those killed. Broke my heart.

I used to work with a guy who was a soldier in the Army, tasked with cleaning up the bodies.
