There should be very little, if any, homework for little kids. No one who understands and loves kids could argue against that.

Maybe from dealing with 12 hours of schoolwork every damn day? That's got to be mentally exhausting for a 4th grader.

what is wrong with an 8 year old taking a nap?

I remember taking naps after school

there is no reason for an 8 year old to be taking naps. If they aren't getting enough sleep, then send their arse to bed earlier. They should be too busy playing outside to be taking naps. If I had a friend that took naps after school we would have made fun of him.

math homework should take 5-10 minutes tops, if your smart it should take 30 seconds.

I dont' believe that a 4th grader has to do a presentation on power point.

There are tons of kids that spend less than 30 minutes a day doing homework with the same work load. If your kid is taking hours to do it, then there's a problem with the kids learning ability, not the amount of homework.

NO. The expression of different viewpoints is the lifeblood of this place. I learnt that in homework.

For example, this week she has 4 test to study for, math homework every night, social studies homework every night, reading every night, english assignment every night, and a science assignment two nights this week. And on top of all that shite she has to prepare a powerpoint presentation and give a 5 minute lecture on the material.

frick that, everyone should take naps. including 8 year olds.

and maybe the 8 yo is tired from staying up to 10pm doing homework?

I do agree that the powerpoint presentation in 4th grade is ludicrous.

It all has to do with federal mandates on what has to be covered. When you take money from the feds you have to do what they say or lose the money.

Elementary School now is nothing like it was when I was there. Kids get pulled from normal class and go to "specials" which set out to help kids in the subjects they struggle with, so in order to make sure the whole class is getting what their supposed they have to rely on parents and homework to fill the gaps in class time.

I'm not a teacher, but from working with school administrations that's what I see. It really is odd to see how schools function these days. Recesses are cut and P.E. is no longer an everyday class, so you got a bunch of kids with boundless energy who are being asked to focus for long periods without any break.

Coming from someone who went to public schools, college, graduate school, and completed doctoral study in my field as well as having help raise two kids and help them with their homework, I really question the pedagogical soundness of a pile of homework. The teaching needs to be more intensive at school. I know that a certain group gets in the way of that and the thing to do is put them to themselves in another classroom and have someone address their learning needs instead of holding the rest of the class back. We've watered things down way too much and it's coming back to bite us in the arse. During the time that I taught college, it was incredible how many students got there and couldn't even write a decent paper or engage in critical reasoning. shite, some of them couldn't even spell. However, I digress, back to the homework issue. Kids need a break as well as they are kids. They need time to unwind, learn other practical life skills, and interact with the rest of their family. My point is that there needs to be a balance. If you want to do reading assignments, that's one thing. To make kids to a bunch of busywork is another thing.

My daughter is in 7th grade and never has had that much homework. The longest may have been an hour, but that is rare. That includes 15 minutes of instrument practice.

You seem to know exactly the amount of homework this kid is required to complete.. Please provide us with an example of a her typical days workload.

it seems like you're pointin gthe OP towards a direction this thread doesn't need to go. You are the one making assumptions towards his kid without knowing anything about the child.
You keep trolling the OP in hopes you can jump all over him for some stupid arse reason.
I stand by my assessment because i had to go through it for the last 2 years. My 15 year old son never had that kind of load and now this year my daughter is relieved of it as well.

When I was in 4th grade, we had similar amounts of homework load, minus the powerpoint, and 4th graders should not be worn out from school, maybe peewee football or cheerleading practice but not school. Also allowing your daughter to take a nap so late in the day will affect her sleep patterns which affects her ability to learn and understand the material.

Goes both ways, though. People attack and defend on the same basis, and the only truth here is that if OP's daughter spends this much time on homework, it is a problem. Zero evidence available to determine the cause of the problem.

Some schools don't. The school I worked at didn't. It really showed in afternoon classes.
