Lottery reform vote at NBA Board of Governors Wednesday. 23 of 30 votes to pass. Philly/OKC will vote "No" but support short on stopping it.

This may open an interesting scenario with the possibility of Philly suing the league for changing the rules in the middle of their rebuild and I actually would support them.

I think if you are gonna to change the rules they shouldn't go into effect for at least 2 or 3 years from now. Too many picks up in the air due to draft protections and teams designing their rebuild around current rules.

I do like the proposed change though.

I tend to agree with that on some levels, but the NBA is seriously pissed at Philly. Silver and the other owners consider it bad for the game.

No team has ever gone to these levels to intentionally tank. It is pretty unbelievable what they are doing.

Philly should be pissed. They shouldn't let this go through until a few years from now. Not fair considering all of the trades involving picks. You can't just change the value of picks that have been traded.

While it's BS that they are changing it on such short notice, it will be hilarious to see Philly get fricked over after clearly tanking

Nah frick Philly.

This is why I wish there was a way to use a relegation system in the NBA. You want to win 12 games a year? Fine, but you'll be in the D league next year.

I haven't read through the thread to know for sure but I assume someone has already brought up the proposal of the draft wheel in which your draft order is fixed by year and does not change with the outcome of the regular season.

This would eliminate the desire of some teams to tank since the reward would be absent. The major disadvantage is obvious as well though - a draft lottery is a small event that is used to celebrate the NBA and maintain additional interest in the off-season. My counter argument is the DL is a very small event that generates nothing interest-wise compared to the attention given to the draft itself; further, the benefits of competitive teams fielded all across the NBA would be season long (whereas the draft lottery is a fairly small event that takes place on a single night).

I could see a middle-of-the-road proposal in which the top five draft picks are fixed and rotate every year but the remaining 20 odd picks are done by lottery. That would prevent teams from tanking to get a Lebron type player but still give some relief for terribly run franchises in need of a top ten pick (at least until they leave via free agency four years later). With this system every six years each NBA team would be guaranteed a top five pick - something which would be good for fan interest across the NBA IMO.

Doesn't bother me too much as a 76ers fan. I understand why the league is upset and why owners fear what Philly is doing. I think the proposed changes are crap though, the team with the worst record should not have the highest odds to get the 7th pick (around 30% I think I read).

Remember that a team that was trying to win, the bucks, finished comfortably ahead of the 76ers last year. Should they be punished?

Yeah I don't get the urgency to do it IMMEDIATELY. They should make it 3-4 years down the road so every team has enough time to start to adapt and adjust accordingly.

The poor 76ers started and have continued the rebuild with a certain model and framework in mind and this is completely unfair to them.

Philly tanking their seasons has been pathetic and has hurt the league in a sense by teams saying "pay us money to watch crap and hopefully in a few years when our plan works, we'll get lucky and be a good to great team".

Trying to lose to game the system doesn't deserve support. I would be thrilled if they made the changes effective immediately just to stop the stupidity that teams like Philly are engaging in.

It's not like lottery reform came out of no where. It's similar to how teams have been operating under the assumption that the 2015-2016 salary cap is going to jump because of the new TV deal.

I'm sure 76er fans hope this change goes through so they can stop being subjected to a D League product.
