re: I'm Concerned about the Potential "Mushrooming" Effect with Ebola

From the standpoint of an individual who lives in a state that has not had a case of Ebola and who cannot do anything to affect whether or not it spreads, no, there is nothing to worry about.
I can have an opinion on whether or not politically we are doing the things we need to do. People don't need to have direct control over something to be concerned about it.

Are you afraid? Are you scared for your health and your family's health?
My concern is not that I, or my family, will walk out the door today and come back with Ebola tonight. My concern is that we are heading to a reality where there will be a significant number of infections across the country. I'm concerned about whether or not we can handle that...whether or not it will negatively affect the healthcare system as a whole, and of course whether or not there becomes an immediate danger to my family and friends.
quote:
Until then, everyone's fears are more disruptive and destructive than this "outbreak" is.
How are people who reflect my concern above disruptive and/or destructive?

I won't call you destructive, but everyone going around saying how big a deal this might be is contagious. The last thing we need is people flooding the health system with false alarms and buying up medical resources and whatnot on the general market.
That said, I do agree that your concern regarding the impact on our healthcare system is similar to mine. I really don't anticipate an outbreak, but 50 cases, the way we handle them, will inspire a public freakout and use up tons of medical resources that may result in dropping the ball on other things (flu?).

quote:Because with the flu season approaching, every individual with fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea who talked to a black guy within the past year wil flood every health center in this country with complaints of "I gots da 'bola!"
How are people who reflect my concern above disruptive and/or destructive?
The more this situation is played up and the more fear-mongering that occurs, the worse it'll get.
I will bet you that more people die of the flu in the US this year than Ebola.

(1) The CDC is now projecting that we will soon see 10,000 new cases of Ebola EACH WEEK.

quote:Unless terrorists get involved, I don't expect anything remotely like a mushrooming effect.
That's my biggest concern. The sheer number of people coming into contact with infected people, and the possibility that these numbers could end up growing exponentially. I'm reluctant to use the term "law of averages," but this is what bothers me the most.
Are we already in the process of experiencing this?
These cases will appear individually, and sporadically until appropriate travel quarantines and/or bans are implemented. Insofar as those outbreaks here are totally avoidable, they are also totally inexcusable. Everyone of them will endanger healthcare workers, unnecessarily so. There may be a few secondary infections outside of healthcare, but those will be infrequent.
It is a bad bug, but with controllable epidemiology.

Not true, is a Facebook troll.

Btw, I live in Texas, so yes, I'm concerned.

I disagree, because the incubation period is so long many people will have forgoten when they first felt the symptoms and where exactly the traveled and who they contacted.
The other nurse traveled in a plane just yesterday, and the plane was used again.
The virus is able to live for days outside the body.
This has the potential to be catastrophic because the virus is so deadly.

quote:Where did you hear this? There has only been one study that addressed the viruses survival outside of the human body and it involved the perfect conditions for viral replication and survival in an indoor, controlled setting.
The virus is able to live for days outside the body.
With ideal viral conditions and an indoor environment, it can survive for up to 6 days.
In the only follow-up study, they showed that in comparison to other viruses, ebola virus is sensitive to both UV light and drying.
Where did you get the "able to live for days" statement?

Stage 1: Panic sets in.
Stage 2: Water and supplies are purchased.
Stage 3: CNN is watched.
Stage 4: Nothing happens.
Stage 5: Wal-Mart and CNN report record profits.

You also forgot to have this between CNN being watched and Water and Supplies are Purchased:
Step 3: CNN reports a lot of false information resulting in increased panic.

Stage 4: Nothing happens.

Do you think that panic has fully set in, or is it setting in?

If one of these people passes away, we are fricked.

quote:I'm so old I can remember when CNN was telling us civilization was going to end as we knew it at midnight on December 31, 1999: all public utilities would cease to work, airplanes would fall from the sky as their on-board computers froze up and our automobiles wouldn't start.
Stage 3: CNN is watched.
Stage 4: Nothing happens.
I was working in Moscow in December, 1999 and I had a very bright young Russian engineer ask me in a panicked voice what was I doing to prepare for the catastrophe of Y2K. I said, "Nothing."
He said, "Schto???" ("What???")
I repeated, "Nothing. It's going to be a none event." He walked away shaking his head.
I saw him again in mid-January. He grinned sheepishly and said, "You were right."
I said, "I know."

And where do we think this virus is? I don't think ebola is a very silent killer. Duncan got it from a woman in late stage. The nurses got it from Duncan, also likely in late stage.
We'll see what happens with the plane, but a minor fever is a lot different from bleeding from multiple orifices and vomiting when it comes to transmission, I'm guessing.

So, this is it with panic? I thought full-blown panic would be empty streets, people with shotguns, wearing surgical masks, dire warnings on the news.
Seems like this is just a little panic, not full panic.

You under-exagerated the level of panic.
We are at about a panic scale 2 out of 10.
Full blown is 8 and up.

6 DAYS in an ideal situation could mean what ? 3 days in a lesser ideal situation ?
