Yet my opinion was couched in complimenting the D's blueline last year.
That's because you now have Niskanen and Orpik, give me a break.

The Pens had a terrific blueline last year, but now one third of it is gone, and another third of it is a huge injury risk. I like Ehrhoff, too. But he anchored the Sabres defense last year. He can't do it by himself.
He's paired with Letang? A top 10 Dman in the league with top 5 potential. Health risk maybe, but he's been cleared to play hockey since last year and that he's absolutely fine so I don't worry a bit about it.
Paul Martin had a GREAT year last year and gets Maatta on his line now, that will be another very solid line.
Pair 3 is the one that could suck, Scuderi had a brutal year last year but he's better than that and will rebound. His experience is key with the youngsters around him. And Scott Harrington the top prospect will likely end up by years end being with him. The Pens have always raved about Simon Despres and his abilities, so he's getting his chance to start every day and see what he's got or Harrington steps in.
It will end up being a lot better than last years defense, especially with how it fits the new system from CMJ.

Well, it looks like I'll be watching the Blues in SD tonight. Thanks, Comcast.

I've made this the season long thread. It worked well last year, and I liked having one thread to rule them all.

I'd rather watch in SD than have a 60+ second delay with GCL, but it would be nice if there was more than two HD Center Ice channels on Comcast.

I'm gonna have to be a dick to him now just to keep up appearances
Posted on 10/9/14 at 5:18 pm to SprintFun
Yeah I was gonna say make sure you still call him on his shite

Martin had a negative Corsi rank last year despite playing against the weakest quality of opponent of any Pens defender. In his defense, he had some of the worst zone starts on the team which probably depresses his numbers. He also only played 39 games. That's a far way from great.

hat's because you now have Niskanen and Orpik, give me a break.
I was complimentary of Niskanen last year. He was far and away the Pens best defender and he had a 14.5 RelCorsi, one of only two Pen defenders to play at least 40 games and have a positive RelCorsi (Maata was the other, at 6.8). Niskanen's offensive contributions were a bit fluky, but he's a terrific defender who by the end of the year was playing the toughest minutes on the team and thriving.
I'm not going to lie about Orpik. He's a slow-footed, old defender who had no business being on the Olympic team. Yet this illustrates my point: I'd still rather have him over an AHL player, Orpik is a flawed player, but he is at least an NHL-caliber player.
Pair 3 could suck? Yeah. That's sort of the problem. Watch some film of last year's Caps if you want to see what happens when you give 15-20 minutes a night to a third pair that should be playing in the minors. The depth also trickles down to special teams, as you only have four penalty killers. And God forbid you have any significant injuries. Then you're playing a project in the second pair.

Yeah you go way too far into some stats, Martin was our best defender by a MILE in the postseason healthy. It wasn't even close. He's still a top tier defenseman in the NHL and will get paid nicely next season by someone.

Disagree here, the Pens will for the second straight season, have the best special teams in the NHL. #1 PP last year and #2 PK. Sutter, Goc, Crosby were the main PKers and are back again, along with Martin/Maatta and now Ehrhoff and Spaling. Our PK is going to be stout once again, and obviously the PP will always be top 2-3 in the league.

Four DEFENSEMEN penalty killers. Sorry, we were just discussing blueliners, I thought you'd pick up on the fact I wasn't discussing your forwards.

How is this thread not anchored? I mean, I have no problem with it... I'm just wondering what makes this one different from the others.

Because this thread exists every year and the fans behave themselves, stay on topic, and not pollute the board with redundant threads on the same exact topics being covered in this thread.
Posted on 10/9/14 at 5:41 pm to Baloo
You need more than 4? I don't know what you're getting at, the Pens will have a top PK in the league once again if not the top.

Tonight's #Pens lines:
Kunitz-Crosby-Hornqvist
Dupuis-Sutter-Malkin
Comeau-Goc-Downie
Sill-Spaling-Adams
I'm guessing when Bennett is back Malkin will shift back to center. This is weird.

Now we'll see who won the trade - Pittsburgh or Nashville. Enjoy Hornqvist, I liked watching him here (even though I'm a Rangers fan I still like Preds games).
He's a typical garbage man. King of the garbage goals but they all count!

I like Spaling a lot too. People discredit him in that trade too much. Still very young too.
Hornqvist is a guy we needed, big physical body in front of the net. We haven't had that in awhile. You'll have to keep me posted on Neal I probably won't watch any Preds games.
10 minutes from puck drop! frick a Duck.
