Yeah, hosting the Olympics seems like a good thing, but in the end it just isn't worth it. Like the article says, many cities think hosting the Olympics is the means to obtaining the end result of publicity, facilities, and profit for a city. Now, people see what the events have done to cities like Athens and they'll say "no thanks."

Maybe the cities should have to host 2 consecutive Olympics instead of just the once, that way the facilities will get more use and the greater chance to recoup costs.

The IOC is also not nearly as interested in sites that already have a lot of the infrastructure and facilities in place.

A lot less kickback opportunities if all you need to do is upgrade some buildings and facilities versus creating a functioning town out of thin air like Sochi.

They are only interested in kickbacks.

They are the modern day Politburo.

First, anybody saying "good" is dumb. The Olympics are the greatest event in the world! Here is the issue with the Olympics currently. Two things, first the IOC has made hosting the game a financial nightmare by demanding completely brand new venues for every sport. Its crazy to make these countries spend billions of dollars on infrastructure for venues that will only have a few games that will ever be played in them. Second...terrorism! Radical Islamic terrorism has become such a worry for hosting nations that they are forced to spend millions more on security. Look at the last two Olympics...London and Sochi, both had to spend unreal amounts of money protecting fans and athletes from terrorist plots. The IOC demands and Terrorism have combined to make hosting the Olympics a losing cause which is sad because the Olympics are the greatest sporting event the world has ever known.

A country that borders the area of peaceful and terrorist free nations like Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Russia. Unreal! Would our athletes seriously be safe?

You gotta watch borat to get the references. I know realistically it's not a good choice being near Afghanistan. I've been there.

Sad truth there. The IOC has priced themselves out of the market by being way too demanding with so little return. And yes they all skim a little here or there.

They really need to just rotate this around 4 sites for each of the Olympics. Use the venues for training and intermediate competitions. Having cities build entirely new venues for this thing every 4 years is stupid.

The City of Birmingham actually spent a few hundred thousand dollars forming a committee and submitting some type of application. What a gigantic waste of money.

Yes it is. I watched a "Build it Bigger" on it the other day. They are currently building 500 or so large modern buildings and the building boom is almost identical to Dubai ten years ago. The show said they have more oil wealth than most of the ME.
