Football Helmets should be leather

Having watched a lot of football I can't help but feel that the modern "spear" helmet is causing many more injuries than it ever prevented.
Firstly players feel more protected than they actually are in them. This leads to playing with reckless abandon and lose form. Do you know how many kids I've seen get hurt from bad form? WAY too many.
Secondly the helmet is capabale of being used as a weapon. We've all seen intentional spears or 'creative' tackling where a helmet gets on the football holding arm or the QB's elbow. Its not just a bit dirty, its much more likely to cause injury.
Thirdly, the "spear" helmets are expensive and still haven't proven hardly any ability to protect from brain injuries. Expensive and innefective are a bad combination.
Given the ability to use the helmet as a weapon and the rates of brain injuries how can you defend the modern helmet?
Toledo is testing a half-baked measure to cover the helmet with padding. Interestingly it looks a LOT like an old leather helmet.

The evolution of the status quo has brought us these monstrosity injury machines we call modern helmets. Instead of meeting halfway at a 'guardian cap' why don't we invest in leather helmets again and go from there?

That's a scrum cap on top of a helmet

People just need to be penalised for not tackling and running correctly. Of course, if the NFL introduced that, many fans would scream "pussification of America".

NFL should just cover their helmets w/ tampons and get it over with already.

People would die. Have you noticed how big, strong, and fast the players have become since they used leather helmets?
And modern helmets prevents tons of injuries. Several on each play. Every kickoff, someone would be unconscious with leather helmets.

I think cover the outside with padding is logical. May look dumb

Modern equiptment has changed the way players play as they feel protected. Taking that away would increase injuries in the short term until players adjusted the way they play but I think it would lower injuries in the long run. No way it would work as a few players would likely be severely injured or maybe die prior to this change in the way they play.

They would have to change the rules. No hitting a RB to the head with any body part.

Take off the face mask and head and neck injury rates will decline precipitously, with slight uptick in broken noses, broken teeth, facial lacerations/abrasions.

as far as I can tell they really have clamped down on tackling form. What is frustrating is when an offensive player lowers his head as low as possible and then gets bailed out on a helmet to helmet penalty.
Nobody is criticizing the ball carriers who are far too quick to lower their head.

I'd love to see the NFL remove facemasks and go back to some kind of protective leather/synthetic helmet.
Seems like players have been using the modern helmet as a weapon instead of a safety item, more so in the last 15-20 years

A lot of technology and research goes into making the current equipment. They know what they're doing.

They should be made out of sofa cushions

I think Georgia Tech is using something similar in practices. They might have developed the technology. Not sure about that one.
I think it is a great idea if it works.
Everything looks dumb when it first starts out.
I can't understand how youth soccer allows the kids to play without the soccer head gear.

This is the reasoning for the NHL not allowing full faceguards. Studies show that when players have a full cage on their hockey helmet they have a "gladiator" affect when making hits. Players no longer hit/check with good form causing more injuries than are already caused by having an open facemask.

Using your logic we should take seatbelts and airbags out of cars because they make people feel safe and drive recklessly.
