I don't even know the actual numerical name of the formation we run on defense i.e. 5-2, 4-3, whatever. When I look at other teams, I see 2 or 3 LB's fairly close behind their DL, so when a QB looks across the LOS, he sees 6 or 7 people staring him down. On the other hand, I look at us and often see no one behind the D-Linemen. Welter may move up to fill a gap, move out to cover a slot man and therefore leaves nothing behind the line. One good block between the guard and tackle and no one touches the RB for 7-8 yds. From a layman's perspective, it looks too easy. Can someone explain how our defensive scheme is designed to stop the straight running play?

LSU runs a typical 4-3 base but many teams force them into a nickel defense with the spread offense. That takes a linebacker off the field. The two remaining LBers and safeties need to be on the second level against the run. But when the middle linebacker fails, the run usually succeeds. Thus, the anger about Welter.

Show me a screenshot where we don't have at least one lb in the box. We run a 4-3 defense. Unless they have 3 or 4 receivers on the field, there's always 3 line backers right behind the d line.

Base 4-3. For some reason the Chief has stayed in base nickel (4 DL, 2LB, 5DB) for the past couple of weeks against teams that spread you out. This is yielded the vulnerable formation that you mentioned that MSU ate up last week. 5 blocking 4 with only the safety 8-10 yards behind them. The extra blocker went straight out to seal the LB trying to get back to the middle.

Auburn will exploit the hell out of that if we try to play it the same way next week.

I posted a similar topic, but I did not get much of a response. When teams have gone no back, we frequently get into a four man front with no linebackers between the offensive tackles. Miss St. and now New Mex St. have gouged us with this. Auburn will too with a really fast QB; the Chief has to can this look.
