Stolen rifle recovered **Update: Used in suicide**

Got a call from the Shelby County Sheriff's dept this morning. One of the rifles that was stolen from me in 2011 was recovered (TC .35 Whelen). Pretty pumped. There's still an A Bolt 300 wsm floating around somewhere out there though.
I'll update with pics when I go get it. Will be interesting to see: A:how it was recovered and B: what kind of shape its in.
Anyway, just thought I'd post something positive about law enforcement for once.
Anybody else have stolen gun/property recovery stories?
***Update***
Just talked to the sergeant again, and he has informed me that my rifle was used in a man's suicide, and he didn't know what kind of shape its in. I'm now waiting on a call from the detective that actually has the gun.
I was really excited, and now I'm all like WTF. What do I do now? I've got to sell it right?

Good news for you. I'm still waiting to hear about 5 handguns taken in '85.

That's great.
Did they mention when you would be able to get it back?
I don't think you will have to wait for the .35 Whelen but with most other firearm recoveries they will do a ballistics check to see if the weapon matches any open cases.

No, the police dive team told me that my boating accident was too tragic for them to be able to locate my sunken collection.
Glad to hear you got something back.

I have a benelli still missing but I did get my 10 ga back. I wish cops and wardens would run gun numbers during routine license checks and traffic stops because a lot of people have no clue they are in possession of a stolen gun.

When i was 12 or 13 I came home to find my house had been broken into. They stole all my dad's guns.
He was at work one day a few months later and a lake Charles officer came into the garage and handed him his .38. They'd found it during a drug raid. Only gun out of 7 or 8 that he got back.
Funny part of the burglary story was that it was the first time I ever saw a dildo. The thieves had rummaged through my stepmom's stuff and tossed the dildo on the floor. The cops were there taking Polaroids of the crime scene and there in the middle of a lot of photographs was "mr. Squirmy" (said that right on the box).

That's awesome. I'm still holding out hope I'll get a call one day about my Sigma and/or my old Recon.
I think Alx had one returned after 10+ years IIRC

My dad had smith model 15 stolen out of his truck back around 1985. It was used in a murder in the 1990's. They returned it to him after the trial was over. It was still in pretty good shape considering.

This one is mine. Had been missing for nearly three years.......turns up in a pre-schoolers backpack. Teacher found it during naptime. Nobody ran the numbers...I noticed it on the front page of the paper and called the Chief of Police. "Thats my gun!" Pulled out my receipt and drove up to the PD and claimed it!
ETA.....probably just outed myself to some of you guys.
beHop, I'm looking for a .35, post pics when its returned.

As long as the barrel doesn't taste any different, I don't see a problem

I had a handgun stolen in Louisiana and recovered in Tennessee a month later. I fought with them for about 5 yrs before I actually got it shipped back to me. Was a pain, but I stayed on them. I would get livid on the phone with them. At first they said I had to come there and get it. My and the family went to visit family in Memphis one weekend. I called the department on Friday letting them know I would be there around 2 pm. They said it would be best to come on a Tuesday. It went like that for a long time. I finally got Jefferson Parish PD involved. That was when I finally got them to ship it.

I hate to hear that this upsets you...but honestly, I am betting that the dude that offed himself is the same one that stole your gun in the first place...so good riddance...

Why sell it? It's got a confirmed kill!!

Sell it just because it killed someone? Hell no. I would never sell it.
