Because the neighborhood they're currently in sucks and most of the consumers live a ways from the stadium....Atlanta ain't exactly a fun area to drive long distances to attend games, it's a business decision

Should be a great park to watch that terrible franchise lose.

I thought Waste Management Field was appropriate.

Because the southside is largely ghetto, and the area around Turner is horrible with nothing to do.

There are definitely racial undercurrents, as you can't deny it when you want to move a stadium from a largely black and impoverished area bordered by increasingly black and impoverished areas to an area that is far more white and well to do.

That said, anyone who blames the Braves for wanting to leave the ghetto is ridiculous, considering it definitely hinders attendance and atmosphere. Moreover, the national criticism is ridiculous, as even Atlanta's "white" areas probably have a ton more diversity than most of the progressive bastions where those comments are coming from.

I just read that the city believes they have an offer for $150 million for Turner Field. It would be turned into a football stadium for GA State,l at a cost of $300 million.

Why don't they just use the GA Dome?

It would be a joint public-private development between GSU and Carter and would be a major campus expansion. $300 million would be the cost of modifying the Ted and developing its parking lots. This would also include re-purposing the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium lot for a new baseball field. LINK

As a GSU alum, we should since it only costs about $70,000 per game to rent the Dome and would probably be the same for the new Falcons stadium.

I always thought Turner Field was one of the blandest stadiums in MLB. This new stadium looks like a Turner Field replica. Lame.

That's the one on the south side of CHattanooga isn't it?

and "Advertising taking some of the burden off taxpayers" isn't exactly true because the same people who are taxpayers pay for the advertising

EVERYBODY pays for pro sports because damn near everything advertises with them.

Because I'd sooner just turn down free Braves tickets than set aside the four or so hours of my life it would take me to drive into Atlanta, sit in traffic on 400, sit in traffic on the connector, sit in traffic and fight people merging onto and off of I-20, sit and fight people trying to turn from the off ramp onto Fulton Street, sit and fight people turning right into the Blue Lot or onto Capitol Avenue, and then sit and fight people turning into one of the other multi-colored lots from there.

Then, repeat that same process in reverse after the game. For every game. 80 of them. And don't make plans to do anything anywhere before or after the game in case you want to arrive early or leave late. There is nothing in the area but panhandlers and ghetto.

What a complete clusterfrick...IF this EVER happens it'll look like something out of "Escape From New York" 10 years after it's done.

How in holy hell can GSU get more than 10K to 15K to come down there to watch FB? There's absolutly NO WAY there'd ever by enough revenue to pay for this pipe dream.

Tech can't come close to selling out unless its UGA,Clemson,FSU of Georgia Southern...how is Ga State going to draw anybody to come down there?

The Ga State plan is actually what that part of the city desperately needs. It would do away with the sea of parking lots and put sports complexes there and breathe new life into the area. I believe State is growing like crazy and this would help solidify them as an up and coming school in the state.

I don't care what the stadium is called as long as the team gets a boatload of cash out of the sponsor.

Don't worry, a Braves player just needs to beat his child and I'm sure Suntrust will drop their sponsorship

This. That is one of the big reasons they are moving. They need the control of a stadium (and the cash that comes with it) to try and make up for the pathetic 20 year TV contract they have.

Honestly, I don't think the shopping mall/mixed-use development is going to pull in nearly as much $$$ as a decent TV contract. It's a damn shame that they're sacrificing the Ted for a quick cash grab (which if Wren is still around will probably blow on another BJ/Uggla).

The only opinion I have on the renderings right now is this: They better not use that lime green color that shows in the pictures for the seating...we aren't the fricking marlins.

okay, you guys can continue arguing about everything else
