There was a time in history when we “cured” headaches by drilling holes in people’s heads to let evil spirits out.

There was also a time when we sent messages via pony express and/or telegraph. These were effective for the time because it was the best we knew how to do with the information available to us.

This is 2014. We no longer have to spank children to have them understand the “error” of their ways. We have made advances in parenting.

We now know how to communicate in a way that actually teaches, rather than punishes.

Doing something because it’s always been done that way and worked out in the past, is not a good reason for continuing.

I misread what you wrote.
I thought you were saying what Rice did was way worse

Not entirely. I don't think beating your kids is ok, but I have no problem with spanking them.

My point was Louis CK used a scene in Louie to get laughs that involved him forcing himself on a woman after she had said no. Forgive me if I don't think his moral compass is calibrated perfectly

Damn you. This is how they cured my grandpa's headaches and he turned out just fine.

So we shouldn't punish kids at all? How are they to learn consequences for their actions?

But deep down, she wanted it, and he knew that.

Keep your ear to the ground. Get laid, profit.

The Latin root of discipline means “to teach,” while the Latin root of punishment means, “to inflict pain.”

oh I don't know, maybe by talking to them? having patience with them? teaching them what they are supposed to do? settings expectations and boundaries? taking away privileges?

beating your kids is lazy and ignorant parenting.

Are consequences not the inflicting of pain? Like taking away TV time or getting put in the punish corner?

i`m kinda on the fence about spanking, would spank my girl when she was very young because seems that was the only thing that worked on a smaller child, but at the same time i was never spanked i was "whooped' most of the time it was because my Dad had a bad day, so a wrong word, could be anything would set him off...so can`t really consider myself a fan of that form of discipline

I have 2. They aren't old enough for that kind of discipline yet, but my oldest does get punished. I assume you don't have any, so thanks for telling me how bad a parent I am with your zero experience

There's so many holes in this statement.

Nah son. Those were the days.
Gettin beat brought your pain tolerance levels up and made you tough.

There's no substitute for that.

I have one and I couldn't ever imagine hitting my child with a belt or my hand or a switch. completely insane to me.

but good luck beating your kids and having them resent you for the rest of their lives
