How would we react to another 9/11?

I think most of us feel that we would want to take a more measured response to a large-scale act of terrorism. That we have learned something from 9/11 and it's aftermath.
But personally I don't know how I would feel if it actually happened again. I don't know how liberal NY or SF would react if their friends and relatives were dead from something like this. I don't know what Obama/Hillary/Republican Prez would do.
It's easy now to claim we would be smarter about it, but I don't think we would be.
Glenn Reynolds yearly on 9/11 links his blog posts from 9/11/01. I read through a bunch of them today and it was remarkable how quickly my emotions from that day were brought back to the surface. Not so much the raw anger, but just the weight of what happened. Also made me feel that I have basically forgotten it for all intents and purposes.
Instapundit 9/11/01
It's interesting to start from the bottom of the link (9/9/01). Scrolling up is ominous.
I don't know how familiar you all are with Instapundit (probably you are very), but I don't think anyone could say he's the type to overreact. His posting are representative of the mood IMO.
I just think we've been lulled into sleep again. I don't think liberals, conservatives, or libertarians have figured out what we're supposed to do about the enemies who are still planning to attack us in worse ways than they did on 9/11.

GEORGE BUSH IS NOW THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE WORLD: People always say that about Presidents, of course, but usually it's only notionally true. Now, if he wants to nuke Baghdad, there is nobody to say him nay -- and damned few who would want to.

VIRGINIA IS MAD. So am I. Hell, so is everyone. And the TV footage of jubilant Palestinians just proves what I've always suspected -- they just don't get it. They'll learn. Oh, how they'll learn. Even if it turns out that this was done by the Chinese, or disaffected high school students, their jubilation will be long remembered. The American role as "mediator" in the Middle East is over.
quote:
THE PRESS COVERAGE on all this seems to focus on horror and tragedy. I don't think it's capturing how angry people are. Foreigners always forget just how mad Americans get when they're pissed off. The dominant tone I'm getting is pissed off. Even the usually-pacifistic intellectuals are adopting a hard line.

ARAB COUNTRIES that want to escape the consequences had best start sucking up to Bush right away, and handing over the culprits' heads on a platter (perhaps literally). This isn't like Lockerbie, or any previous event. It's war.

Depends on a lot of things, scope, perpetrators, but if its proven they came across the Southern Border, I expect things will get very interesting.

I would like to think we wouldn't be so quick to offer up even more of our freedoms in the name of safety, but, sadly, I'm probably wrong.

With the current NCA/ Foreign policy team?
America's done.
America's done.

quote:That seems to be the big concern a lot of Americans have... at least those of us who can connect dots and can recognize a determined enemy who can and does take many forms (al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS/ISIL, certain Mexican drug cartels, Iran, et al). Something they have going for them that while their memories are long and sharp, what most Americans lack is a long memory for revenge. We are the original nation of short attention spans - distract us with a good domestic political fight and an economic downturn and we forget there is a world out there in a heartbeat.

I don't think another 9/11 will happen like the first. I think it will be different, and likely far worse.

conservatives would blame obama and talk about golfing and red lines and the country would not come together as it did after 9/11. it would be ugly.

The nation would come together again IMO. We are a vastly different nation now for a lot of reasons, but we are still Americans and we would still come together.
That said, though I view the Bush presidency as a failure overall, I do think that his general nature and demeanor in the direct aftermath of 9/11 helped bring the country together.
He also enjoyed the benefit of being a new president. Obama has so much water under the bridge and has proven time and time again to be ineffective and late to the party, that he would be quite easy to blame.
I think he would have his hands full, through fault of his own and no fault of his own, in stepping in and uniting the nation. I think any threats he would make for revenge would be viewed with skeptical eyes, even by his most staunch supporters.
In the end though, at least for a few months, we would stand united in spite of our leadership and political differences.

With our current leadership....America will collectively bend over and take it in the rear...

Obama has been prosecuting a fairly aggressive Drone Strike offensive for years now. He is taking heat from his Far Left allies for this, but, he has not stopped.
This offensive is exactly what any Repub POTUS would also be doing.
As for Homeland Security, except for his immigration policy, Obama seems to be mostly doing what Bush did.
The CIA says that the thread level for another 9/11 is quite high right now. I don't know whether it's because the enemy is trying harder now or because the US is not trying hard enough.
But to answer the OP question directly, the US response would probably involve military action, but, no nation-building.

Two things: mass carpet bombings and salting their fields.

Lots of people would find God again.
I hated that 9/11 happened but the country came together and church's were filled to the brim. It was something I've never seen before. I miss that unity but in NO WAY shape or form do I hope we have to endure that kind of tragedy again.

911 style is sooo over rated as terror goes.
Small carbombs near schools, or shopping areas during Christmas would cause more havoc than some big grand scheme. keeping it simple and constant would be our biggest fear.
Furguson style across America will follow when panic hits.
Go without power for some time and see what happens

Like some one said a lot of unknowns.
That said a couple of things:
1. We would be less shocked and quicker to respond.
2. Blame will come much faster.
3. The people will be much much more cautious in giving the states and feds more power.
4. Bush's "war on terror" will be viewed even more harshly.

We would still be BFFs with the Saudis, where the terrorists would come from, and we'd probably invade another country that had nothing to do with it.
