I must say, the WSM loses some of its luster with a tikka, because it only comes in long action.

Eta- I know that's not your point but I ain't playing your game lol.

If you already have a .270 then you are good to go.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the .270 slightly outreach the .308?

Yes, but this board is obsessed with the .308. Sometimes I wonder if they've ever held a .308 cartridge next to a .270/.30-06.

Can't go wrong with a Tikka. Supposed to be the most accurate right out of the box. Switched from a Remington 700 .270 and haven't looked back

Because the .308 is a spectacular whitetail round. All that extra brass on a .30-06 doesn't gain it all that much over the .308

In LA no, but a 180 at some range, it does. He said reach out and touch. The .06 does it better than the 308 in a bolt action at 400+

Nobody buying a $500 rifle is figuring on shooting 400+ with any success.

At least I hope not

Looking for a good all around deer rifle. Something that I can't reach out and touch em with but also good in this woods. I have a .270 would like to get a different caliber. Price range try and keep around $500 with no scope. I have a leupold I'll be putting on it.

Something that is suitable for everything is likely excellent at none of it. An ideal stalking gun would be .30-30 or even an AR-10.

"Reach out and touch 'em" implies to me, shots of 300, 400, perhaps even 500 yards and no stalking/woods gun is going to be good at that. Likewise, long action deer guns, in heavier, longer calibers are not going to be as good up close in the woods - generally.

If you just want to try a different calibe, I encourage you to try the same or similar platform you have now in .300 RUM - and experiment with the various "powers" it is an intriguing one-gun solution to most medium-to-large game you can take in North America.

Conversely, if you don't have a good hunting carbine - lever action .30-30 or an AR - perhaps now is the time to add one - an AR-10, in fact, can serve very adequately in a home defense role - one of the few widely available guns that can actually excel in both roles - although they are a bit pricey.

Ballistically twins for most shooters' purposes - perhaps the .30-06 reaches a little further with a little more energy, but really only at the heavier bullet weights. If you're using commercial (not handloads) ammo, the platform, particularly the barrel length and stiffness will dictate your ballistic differences far more than chambering.

I bought a Browning BAR 7mm Mag for $500 yesterday. Yup, overkill for whitetail but I will still try lol.

You would have been a candidate for the .300 RUM cartridge.

I'm still intrigued by the concept.
